Plot twist

Chapter 9 - THE VIDEO THAT ALMOST DESTROYED GIOVANNI

The video looked real.

That was the problem.

Giovanni.

Twenty-two.

Angry.

Standing in warehouse.

Matteo off camera.

Young Giovanni shouted:

“If you walk away now, don’t expect me to stop Father when he comes for you.”

Then another line:

“If you make me choose between family and you, I’ll bury you myself.”

Video ended.

Television replayed every hour.

GIOVANNI MORETTI THREATENED BROTHER BEFORE DEATH.

FEDERAL COOPERATOR ACCUSED OF ORDERING FAMILY MURDER.

Social media worse.

Luca watched ten seconds.

Turned off.

“Did you say it?”

Giovanni sat across.

“Yes.”

No denial.

“Did you mean?”

“At that moment?”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

Luca’s face changed.

“Dad.”

“I was twenty-two and furious.”

“That's not excuse.”

“No.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Order?”

“No.”

“Want?”

Giovanni thought.

“That night, I wanted him punished.”

“Dead?”

He closed eyes.

“I don't know.”

Hard.

Honest.

Luca stood.

“I need air.”

“Security—”

Giovanni stopped himself.

Luca looked.

“Can I walk backyard?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Barone’s strategy obvious.

Giovanni had begun cooperating.

Discredit witness.

Turn government against.

Turn public.

Turn family.

Maybe trigger violence.

Instead Giovanni called federal contact.

“That video is real.”

Attorney nearly choked.

“You need say altered until analysis.”

“No.”

“It is real.”

“Context?”

“Worse around it probably.”

“What happened before?”

“Matteo said he was leaving.”

“After?”

“I threw a chair.”

“Excellent.”

Lawyer groaned.

“Then?”

“He walked out.”

“That was last time you saw?”

“Yes.”

“Until fake funeral?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have proof you didn't order murder?”

Giovanni laughed.

“How does one prove not ordering?”

Exactly.

Federal investigators did not arrest.

Threat video not enough.

But cooperation temporarily paused while reviewed.

Boards panicked.

One legitimate company suspended him.

News outside house.

Then Elena received anonymous message:

YOUR DAUGHTER’S UNCLE IS A MURDERER.

She deleted after police screenshot.

Emilia read through school rumor anyway.

She confronted Giovanni.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Mom believes?”

“Yes.”

“Lauren?”

“Yes.”

“Luca?”

Giovanni looked toward son.

Luca had not said.

Emilia swallowed.

“I want believe.”

Giovanni’s face softened.

“You don't have to decide because I’m family.”

That mattered.

“Then how?”

“Evidence.”

There.

“Until then?”

“You can be unsure.”

She cried.

“I hate unsure.”

“So do I.”

Two days later, Barone released second clip.

Matteo:

“You want the family, Gio?”

“Take it.”

Giovanni:

“I will.”

Matteo:

“Then one of us is already dead.”

Cut.

Dramatic.

Again.

Investigators sought original.

No luck.

Then Isabella, from detention, requested meeting.

She had watched TV.

“I can prove context.”

Why help?

“Salvatore left me.”

Of course.

Not morality maybe.

Still evidence.

She said original recordings came from security camera in warehouse office.

Carlo Moretti recorded internal conversations routinely.

Tapes later digitized.

Barone stole some.

Isabella kept backups.

Police had seized archives but not yet cataloged.

Thousands hours.

She gave date.

They found.

Full footage.

We watched privately.

Matteo:

“Father wants me to do Romano job.”

Giovanni:

“Then do.”

“No.”

“You always say no now.”

“Because he wants civilians involved.”

“Collateral.”

I felt sick hearing young Giovanni.

He flinched too.

Matteo:

“That word is how men stop hearing names.”

Silence.

Giovanni:

“You're weak.”

Matteo:

“Maybe.”

“Then I’m leaving.”

Giovanni:

“You don't leave.”

“Watch me.”

Giovanni grabs shoulder.

Matteo pushes.

Chair falls.

Then threat:

“If you walk away now, don't expect me to stop Father when he comes for you.”

Matteo:

“I’m not asking.”

Giovanni:

“If you make me choose between family and you, I’ll bury you myself.”

Matteo stares.

Then:

“You already chose.”

Long silence.

Young Giovanni’s face changes.

Rage fades.

“Matteo.”

Brother walks.

Giovanni:

“Wait.”

Matteo stops.

Giovanni whispers:

“Don't make me do this without you.”

Everything changed.

Not threat erased.

Still ugly.

But next line mattered.

Matteo:

“Then come with me.”

Young Giovanni freezes.

Could have.

Did not.

Matteo smiles sadly.

“That’s what I thought.”

Leaves.

Giovanni follows doorway.

Does not pursue.

Barone’s edit removed plea.

Come with me.

The choice.

Giovanni sat shaking.

“I forgot that.”

Trauma.

Time.

Convenient? Video confirms.

Luca beside.

“You could have gone.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't?”

“Cowardice.”

Good.

“Fear.”

“Power.”

“Father.”

“All.”

Luca leaned back.

“Then Uncle Matteo wasn't asking you to pick him.”

“He was asking you to pick yourself.”

Giovanni looked at son.

Maybe.

“Smart.”

Luca shrugged.

“Therapy.”

Good.

Full video released through counsel after investigators approved.

Public narrative shifted.

Not total innocence.

Giovanni still young violent man.

He publicly said:

“The unedited recording does not make my words acceptable.”

Good.

“I threatened my brother.”

“I helped make home unsafe for him.”

“I did not order his death.”

“I am cooperating with investigation into those who did.”

No victim performance.

Barone lost some credibility.

Then forensic analysis of Barone’s TV background found reflection.

Hotel window.

Boston skyline? Actually Providence.

Agents located interview production intermediary.

Barone moved again.

But narrowing.

Meanwhile, my own marriage strain eased slowly.

Not because crisis solved.

Because Giovanni kept telling me everything.

Every call.

Threat.

Business consequence.

Even one ridiculous anonymous email claiming Luca was not his son.

He forwarded.

“Do I need see nonsense?”

“You said everything.”

I laughed.

“Use judgment.”

He looked horrified.

“Dangerous.”

Good.

Then federal prosecutors called.

Barone’s lawyer.

He wanted immunity-style negotiation in exchange for truth about Matteo.

Government rejected full immunity.

Offered discuss.

Barone demanded one condition:

Private meeting with Giovanni.

No.

Everyone said.

Especially me.

Giovanni asked:

“What if he has truth?”

Price answered:

“He can tell us.”

Exactly.

Barone refused.

Three days.

Then changed.

Because money frozen.

Safe houses identified.

Allies arrested.

Old power became inconvenience.

He provided proffer.

Admitted ordering surveillance.

Admitted intimidation Elena.

Admitted helping fake death.

Denied ordering Matteo murder.

Blamed Anthony.

His dead son.

Convenient.

Then prosecutors showed Anthony’s old message recovered from cloud backup:

FATHER SAYS MATTEO DOESN’T REACH NEW YORK.

Barone went silent.

There.

Not perfect.

Strong.

He finally admitted:

“I told Anthony stop him.”

“What did stop mean?”

Silence.

Eventually:

“Whatever necessary.”

Legal argument over intent.

But enough conspiracy.

Barone surrendered.

At federal courthouse.

No gunfight.

No church.

No family reckoning.

Old man in gray suit.

Handcuffs.

Giovanni watched on television.

He did not smile.

“What feel?”

I asked.

“Tired.”

Good.

Then phone rang.

Price.

One more discovery from Barone files.

A letter Matteo wrote to Giovanni but never sent.

Not because Barone hid it.

Because Matteo never mailed.

Found among possessions after death.

Addressed:

GIO.

Giovanni stared.

“Do you want read?”

I asked.

He thought.

“Yes.”

Not alone.

He asked Luca and Emilia.

Their choice.

Both yes.

Letter began:

Brother,

If I come home, I need you to know I am not coming back to the family.

I am coming back to you.

Giovanni started crying before second paragraph.

May you like

And for first time, the thing threatening to destroy him was not Barone.

It was possibility that Matteo had been ready to forgive long before either brother knew how little time remained.
