Chapter 2 - THE SENATOR’S VERDICT

The temperature inside the glass-walled penthouse dropped past freezing the exact second Victoria Wren’s voice sliced through the silence.
Grant Huxley stood paralyzed, his hand still raised in a half-finished gesture of authority, his grey eyes wide with a sudden, absolute terror that he had never shown to the public.
Behind him, Savannah Vale’s glass of champagne slipped from her manicured fingers, shattering on the black marble floor and splashing pale gold liquid over her red satin dress.
The two federal marshals stepped out of the private elevator, their hands resting with practiced, lethal calm against the leather holsters of their sidearms.
> "Mother..." Grant stammered, his voice losing its predatory edge, replaced by the desperate, frantic tone of a man watching his empire crumble. "This is a private marital dispute. Ava was—"
"Silence, Grant," Senator Victoria Wren commanded, her winter-white coat rustling softly as she took a slow, deliberate step onto the marble.
She did not look at him; her eyes were fixed entirely on her daughter, Ava, who lay curled beside the shattered glass table, clutching her broken left arm against her heavily pregnant belly.
"If you speak another word in my presence without a federal attorney, I will personally ensure your commercial registries are frozen by midnight," Victoria whispered, her voice carrying the absolute, unyielding power of a woman who had ruled the Senate for two decades.
She knelt beside Ava, her silver hair catching the cold light of the crystal chandeliers as her gloved hand gently touched her daughter’s pale, sweat-slicked forehead.
"I’m here, my love," Victoria said softly, her eyes filling with a fierce, protective maternal rage. "The ambulance is already downstairs, and the sirens you hear are not for a party."
Ava looked up at her mother, her breathing shallow and ragged, her lips trembling as she forced herself to remain upright.
"He... he broke my arm, Mom," Ava whispered, her voice a small, fragile thread that seemed to shatter the remaining arrogance in the room. "Savannah lied to him about the documents, and he... he wouldn't let me call for help."
Grant took a sudden, panicked step forward, his hands raised defensively as the federal marshals instantly mirrored his movements, their body language tightening into a silent warning.
"It was an accident!" Grant protested, his face turning an ash-gray color under the harsh ceiling lights. "She was resisting me! I only wanted to see her phone because she was threatening the Stanton merger!"
"The only thing being threatened tonight, Grant, is your freedom," Senator Wren said, slowly rising from the floor, her expression as cold and unforgiving as a granite headstone.
"Marshal Collins, secure the suspect."
The lead marshal stepped forward, his heavy boots clicking sharply against the stone floor as he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
Before Grant could raise his voice or call his private security team, the metal rings snapped shut around his wrists with a sharp, definitive clack.
"You can't do this to me!" Grant roared, his body tensing in a futile effort to resist the marshal's grip. "I am the chief executive of the Huxley Group! My attorneys will have this warrant dismissed before the sun rises!"
"Your attorneys don't have jurisdiction over a federal assault charge on a witness, Grant," Senator Wren replied, her voice carrying a chilling, absolute certainty.
"Take him down."
As the officers guided the shouting, struggling billionaire toward the private elevator, Savannah Vale backed away into the shadows of the corridor, her face pale, her diamonds suddenly looking like cold ice against her throat.

But the trap had already been set, and the glass kingdom of the Huxley family was officially beginning to fracture.
