Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE GLASS KINGDOM

The seventy-two hours of arrogant confidence the Huxley family had displayed dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the federal marshals closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Grant's wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

"Ava, please!" Grant sobbed, his face wet with frantic, streaming tears as he looked at his mother-in-law, who was already standing behind the marshals.

"I didn't mean to hurt you! It was an accident! We were trying to protect the merger!"

"An accident that involved holding your eight-month-pregnant wife down by force and causing her wrist to snap, Grant?" I asked, my voice carrying a freezing authority.

"An accident that involved siphoning forty million dollars from your company's retirement fund to cover your Panama debts?"

Savannah tried to lunge toward the private service exit behind the grand fireplace, her face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl of panic.

But two heavily built marshals tackled her to the floorboards, pinning her gold-clad frame against the white silk tablecloth and snapping the steel handcuffs around her wrists.

The golden prince of the corporate empire was reduced to a pale, shivering felon, his family's empire of lies permanently dismantled.

The district attorney moved with a swift, mathematical precision that left no room for high-society influence or political bribes.

By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court had officially executed an emergency suspension of all Huxley Group operations.

Their personal assets were frozen, and their luxury estate was liquidated to pay the massive restitution fines to our employees' retirement fund.

Their family name was permanently erased from the city's registries, and our logistics shipping lines were restored under the original Stanton name.

I stood in the quiet of our living room, watching the warm afternoon sun paint the hardwood floors in shades of gold and amber.

The cold hallway and the terrifying voice of my husband's anger had burned away the final remnants of our naive submission, transforming us into the sovereign masters of our own destiny.

The old script of our family's silence was permanently destroyed.

Our independent fortress was built.

And our real, beautiful life was finally ready to begin.
