Chapter 5 - THE SHATTERED MERGER

The grand executive boardroom on the ninetieth floor of the Stanton Tower was a breathtaking, suffocating monument to corporate power and old-money greed.

The air was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, polished mahogany, and the impending reckoning of a corporate execution.

Thirty of the city’s most prominent investment bankers, board directors, and high-society attorneys sat in high-backed chairs around the massive mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Grant, his midnight-blue suit immaculate, his face carrying a smug, victorious grin that had been painted on by his high-priced lawyers.

Beside him stood Savannah, her gold-trimmed dress looking like a gilded cage, her fingers tracing the edge of the transfer deeds with a triumphant satisfaction.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Grant announced, his smooth, theatrical voice carrying a chilling, artificial sweetness.

"Tonight, as we prepare to finalize the integration of our maritime shipping lines, we celebrate the absolute consolidation of the Stanton-Huxley estate."

"Due to the sudden, unfortunate medical incapacitation of my wife, Ava, our committee has assumed full, emergency guardianship over the trust patents."

He raised a gold-plated fountain pen, preparing to slide the nib across the final signature line of the multi-million-dollar agreement.

"The signature on those deeds constitutes federal wire fraud, Grant," a cold, clear voice cut through the boardroom like a razor-sharp wire.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were violently thrown open, the wood panels vibrating against the stone frame.

I walked through the threshold, my head held high, my posture rigid, commanding, and completely unbreakable.

I wore an immaculate, sharp white power suit, my left arm held in a clean white cast, my right hand resting proudly on my pregnant belly.

Beside me walked my mother, Senator Victoria Wren, her silver hair styled into a flawless wave, her winter-white coat draped over her shoulders.

Behind us walked Captain Marcus and a team of six armed federal marshals, their tactical vests displaying the gold shields of the Treasury Division.

"Ava?" Grant gasped, the gold pen slipping from his shaking fingers and clattering loudly against the polished mahogany table.

His face turned an instant, pasty shade of gray under the bright lights, his knees buckling slightly as the reality of our return struck his mind.

"What... what is this? This is a private corporate transition!"

"The transition is officially void under the federal fraud statutes, Grant," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room.

Marcus stepped onto the platform, plugging the secure digital drive from our safe house into the table's main media console.

The massive, sixty-foot projector screens behind the chairman instantly illuminated, displaying the high-definition video of the penthouse assault.

The thirty directors watched in breathless, paralyzed horror as the recording of Grant striking my arm while Savannah smiled played on a continuous loop.

"My God," the board chairman whispered, standing up from his table in deep, professional disgust.

"This... this is monstrous."

"They were poisoning the mother and holding the unborn child's legacy hostage to cover their corporate debts."
