Chapter 1 - The Hollow Echo

I was bleeding to death on my newborn son's nursery floor while my husband stood on the balcony of a luxury Aspen resort raising a whiskey glass and joking about his "high-maintenance wife." Three days later, he walked back into our home expecting my smile and our baby's cries, only to find an empty house, a silent nursery, and a nightmare he never saw coming.
My name is Emma Parker, and this happened just outside Denver, Colorado. Just ten days after giving birth to my beautiful son, Ethan, what should have been the happiest time of my life turned into the most terrifying, and the man who had promised to protect me became the one who abandoned me when I needed him most.
I was kneeling beside Ethan's bassinet when I suddenly felt warmth spreading through my clothes. I looked down in horror as blood soaked the nursery rug, and sharp waves of pain stole every breath I tried to take.
"Ryan... please," I whispered, barely able to speak. "Something's wrong."
He stood in the hallway adjusting his expensive sweater while staring at his reflection instead of me. His overnight bag was already waiting by the front door, packed for the birthday getaway he had been excited about for weeks.
"It's just postpartum bleeding," he said without even turning around. "You're being dramatic."
My vision blurred as I struggled to stay conscious. "This isn't normal. Please... I need the hospital."
He finally looked at me, but there wasn't an ounce of concern in his face.
"My mom had three kids," he scoffed. "She never acted like this."
Ethan began crying inside his bassinet, and I desperately tried to crawl toward my phone. My hands kept slipping in my own blood, and every movement left me weaker than the last.
"Don't ruin my birthday weekend," Ryan snapped. "Take an aspirin. The nanny starts Monday."
Then he walked out the front door without another glance.
The sound of his car faded into the distance, taking every feeling of safety with it. I reached for my phone with shaking fingers, but before I could grab it, my body gave out and I collapsed onto the nursery floor.
The last thing I clearly remember was Ethan crying only a few feet away while I couldn't reach him.
Then my phone lit up.
Ryan had posted a video from the balcony of a luxury mountain resort in Aspen. Snow-covered peaks stretched behind him as he laughed with his friends, lifted a whiskey glass into the air, and smiled like he didn't have a wife bleeding to death back home.
"Here's to surviving high-maintenance wives," he joked. "Sometimes you've got to choose yourself. Happy birthday to me!"
I watched the video replay through blurred vision, each second breaking my heart a little more than the last.
Time stopped making sense.
My body grew colder.
Heavier.
Harder to move.
Even Ethan's cries slowly became weaker until I could barely hear them anymore.
Then everything went black.
Three days later, Ryan returned home humming to himself while proudly wearing the expensive watch he had bought during his vacation. He unlocked the front door expecting life to be exactly as he had left it.
Instead, he stepped into complete silence.
The nursery rug was stained a dark brown. The air smelled stale, abandoned, and deeply wrong, and Ethan's bassinet sat alone in the middle of the room.
Empty.
No baby.
No wife.
No sound.
"Emma?" he called, forcing a nervous laugh that quickly disappeared.
Only silence answered him.
His suitcase slipped from his hand and crashed onto the hardwood floor, shattering the expensive watch as panic finally took hold.
"Ethan!" he shouted again, his voice trembling with fear.
For the first time since I had known him, Ryan looked truly terrified because he believed he had abandoned a dying wife and a helpless newborn... and now both of us had vanished without a trace.
What he didn't know was that after he drove away toward his birthday celebration, someone else had walked through our front door. Someone had heard my son's desperate cries, found me lying on that nursery floor, and made a decision that would change all of our lives forever.
The truth about who saved us would destroy everything Ryan believed about his perfect world...
Because I hadn't simply disappeared.

I had been taken.
