Chapter 5 - The Rising Tide

The city lights were a blurred tapestry of neon gold.
Ryan walked toward them, his boots echoing on the pavement.
He wasn't running anymore.
The park, the rain, and Emma’s whisper—they were a catalyst.
He reached a small diner on the outskirts of the district.
The sign flickered, a dying hum in the night.
He pushed the door open.
The scent of grease and burnt coffee greeted him.
It was humble.
It was real.
He took a seat at the counter.
A man in a stained apron nodded at him.
"You look like you've seen a ghost, friend."
Ryan offered a faint smile.
"I have," he replied.
"Want a job?" the man asked, wiping his hands on a towel. "My dishwasher walked out an hour ago."
"I'll take it," Ryan said.
He didn't hesitate.
He didn't ask about the pay.
He didn't ask about the hours.
He put his bag down and walked into the back.
The water was scalding, the steam thick and heavy.
He scrubbed the plates with a rhythmic focus.
Each movement was a prayer.
Each plate was a memory he was cleaning away.
He realized the streets had stripped him down to his bones.
But in the heat of this kitchen, he was being forged into something else.
He wasn't a shadow anymore.
He was a man who could hold his own weight.

Tomorrow was coming.
And for the first time, he was ready to meet it.
