Plot twist

Chapter 1 - The Midnight Rainstorm

The unrelenting rain was coming down in sheets—thick, freezing, and entirely merciless.

I stood shivering on the concrete front porch, soaked to the very bone.

My thin cotton pajamas clung to my skin as the bitter wind ripped through the yard.

My teeth chattered uncontrollably.

I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to shield the fragile life growing inside me.

The massive mahogany door behind me was locked tight.

The brass bolt had been thrown with a definitive click.

Gavin had slammed it shut exactly fifteen minutes ago.

His handsome face was twisted into an expression of cold, calculated malice.

“You think you can just question my financial decisions and talk back to me in my own home?” he had sneered through the narrow opening.

“Stay out there in the dark until you learn some basic respect.”

It wasn't the first time he had engineered a cruel punishment to control me.

But it was the first time he had done it in the dead of night during a severe thunderstorm.

I banged my raw knuckles against the reinforced wood.

My voice cracked under the weight of panic.

“Gavin! Please open the door! It’s freezing, and you know I don't have my shoes or my phone!”

There was absolutely no response from the dark windows.

There was only the deafening sound of rain assaulting the roof, and a quiet buzz of humiliation eating me alive.

My phone was on the kitchen counter.

My slippers were by the sofa.

The entire street was completely dark.

I was a proud woman, a former architectural designer who had given up her career at his request.

I wasn't about to go knocking on a stranger's door looking like a vagrant.

I slowly slid down the wet brick wall, curling my body into a tight ball on the welcome mat.

I hated crying in front of him because he fed on my tears like a predator.

But out here alone in the shadows, I couldn't stop them.

Suddenly, a pair of bright, piercing headlights cut through the heavy curtain of rain.

A massive, midnight-black Rolls-Royce smoothly purred up the driveway, its tires crunching on the wet gravel.

The vehicle came to a structured stop directly in front of the porch.

The rear door swung open, and a chauffeur hurried out, holding a massive black umbrella aloft.

From the leather interior stepped an elegant woman whose posture defied the passage of time.

It was my eighty-one-year-old grandmother, Katherine Vance.

Dressed in a heavy fur coat, her silver hair styled into an unbreakable crown, she looked like an emperor surveying a ruined province.

Her sharp, pale blue eyes locked onto me shivering on the concrete floor.

"Clara," she said, her voice a low, echoing baritone that cut through the thunder. "Get off the floor."

The front door behind me instantly clicked open as Gavin stepped out, trying to plaster on a smooth, filial smile.

"Grandmother Katherine! I didn't expect you tonight," he stammered, his eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror.

Katherine didn't look at him; she simply reached into her leather bag and pulled out a modern satellite phone.

She spoke into the receiver, her words dripping with a cold, industrialized finality that shook my very soul.
