Chapter 4 - The Final Asset Audit

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting a warm, golden light over the financial district of Manhattan.

I sat in the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Vance Building, wearing a sharp tailored navy suit.

My baby bump was clearly visible now, a beautiful reminder of the future I was fiercely protecting every single day.

Across the wide mahogany table sat Gavin and his father, Richard Miller, surrounded by four frantic corporate defense attorneys.

Their faces were pale, their eyes dark-rimmed from spending the last forty-eight hours trying to stop the financial bleeding.

"Dr. Vance, this is an unprecedented level of corporate aggression," the lead defense attorney pleaded toward my grandmother.

"The total liquidation of the Miller Development Group has displaced over three hundred project employees."

"The employees have already been absorbed by Vance Industrial with higher salary packages," Katherine cut him off coldly.

"The only assets being permanently terminated are the personal holdings of Richard and Gavin Miller."

Gavin looked across the table at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic mixture of anger and regret.

The arrogant, calculated malice he had displayed on the freezing porch had completely vanished into thin air.

"Clara, please," he whispered, his voice trembling as he reached his hand across the polished wood.

"We can go to counseling, we can rebuild the house, I was stressed about the commercial project margins—"

"The project margins were failing because you were laundering funds through fake vendor invoices, Gavin," I said.

My voice was steady, carrying the absolute authority of a lead architectural director who had audited the files.

"I didn't just tell my grandmother about the porch; I delivered the dual-entry ledgers to the federal grand jury."

Richard Miller stood up from his chair, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of crimson.

"You think your family can just buy the justice system, Katherine?" he roared, pointing an angry finger at my grandmother.

"The local zoning laws will hold that demolition report for years! I will tie this estate up in court forever!"

Before Katherine could even blink, the double glass doors of the boardroom were pushed open from the outside.

Two federal marshals stepped into the room, accompanied by a woman carrying the gold badge of the SEC.

"Richard Miller, Gavin Miller, you are both under arrest for federal wire fraud and illegal asset masking," the agent announced.

The heavy metallic click of the handcuffs closing around Gavin’s wrists was the final, perfect punctuation to the drama.

He looked back at me as he was led out of the room, his eyes wide with the exact same terror he felt when the walls fell.

He had thought he was locking out a broken, pregnant wife who had nowhere left to turn in the dark.

Instead, he had simply locked himself into an inescapable cell of his own arrogant creation.

Katherine stood up from the head of the table, her fur coat draped elegantly over her stooped shoulders.

"The site has been fully cleared, Clara," she said, looking out the massive windows at the city skyline.

"The blueprints you designed for the new pediatric center have been approved by the municipal planning board."

"We will begin the foundation pour on the exact spot where that red brick house used to stand."

I walked up to her side, pressing my hand against my stomach as a soft kick vibrated against my palm.

The humilation of the freezing rain was gone, replaced by the unbreakable foundation of the family name.

The thieving men who had tried to crush my spirit were heading to a federal holding facility for the rest of the decade.

The corporate wars were won, the legacy was secure, and our real life had just officially begun.
