Chapter 2 - The Industrial Reckoning

The satellite phone clicked shut, and Katherine slipped it back into her coat pocket without a single hint of emotion.
Gavin’s smooth, aristocratic face transformed into a mask of pure, unadulterated shock.
"Grandmother, what are you talking about?" he asked, his voice cracking slightly as the rain beat against the porch roof.
"This is my family property, you can't just bring construction vehicles onto my lawn!"
Katherine finally turned her sharp, predatory gaze toward him, her silver eyebrows rising by a fraction of an inch.
"Your family property, Gavin?" she asked, her voice quiet but carrying the weight of a mountain range.
"You seem to forget who signed the corporate guarantees for your father’s development firm twenty years ago."
"You seem to forget that the land beneath your feet belongs to the Vance holding corporation."
She turned to the chauffeur, gesturing toward the open door of the luxurious black vehicle.
"Take Clara inside the car, turn the heating to maximum, and bring the medical kit from the trunk."
The chauffeur gently helped me off the wet brick wall, shielding my shivering body with the massive umbrella.
As I slid onto the warm leather seat, the heat instantly rushed over my skin, thawing the deep ice in my bones.
Gavin stepped off the porch, his bare feet hitting the wet gravel as he tried to intercept my grandmother.
"This is an absolute violation of property rights!" he shouted, his arrogance fighting against his growing panic.
"I will call the local precinct captain immediately, he is a personal friend of my father!"
"Call him," Katherine replied flatly, not even pausing as she walked toward the rear passenger side.
"Tell him that Katherine Vance is executing a corporate repossession based on a material breach of contract."
Suddenly, a low, rhythmic vibration began to shake the earth beneath the suburban street.
The deep, mechanical growl of heavy diesel engines echoed through the midnight storm, growing louder by the second.
From the dark corner of the avenue, three massive yellow commercial bulldozers turned the corner.
Their giant metal blades gleamed under the streetlamps, followed by two heavy excavators with hydraulic claws.
The fleet belonged to Vance Industrial—the massive conglomerate my grandfather had built and Katherine still fully controlled.
Simon, the lead project manager, jumped down from the cabin of the first bulldozer, wearing a bright orange high-visibility jacket.
"Madam Vance, the perimeter has been secured and the utility lines have been capped at the street main," he reported.
"The structure is fully cleared for immediate mechanical demolition."
Gavin ran back up the porch steps, throwing the heavy mahogany door open and sprinting inside the dark house.
"You won't do it!" he screamed from the second-floor balcony window. "I'm still inside! You'll be charged with murder!"
Katherine stood in the rain, her black umbrella completely steady, her silver hair completely untouched by the wind.

She looked up at the window, a small, cold smile appearing on her elegant face for the first time tonight.
"Simon," she ordered softly over the roar of the engines. "Commence the primary structural breach."
