Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The ballroom floorboards seemed to vibrate as Richard Vale walked toward the center of the room.
He didn’t need to shout.
His presence brought an oppressive silence over the crowd.
Vivian Blackwood, still clutching the engagement ring she had ripped from my finger, wore a look of growing realization.
She looked from me to my father, then back to the ring.
"Vivian," my father said, his voice as smooth as polished granite.
"I believe you have something that belongs to my daughter."
Vivian opened her mouth, her face pale.
No sound escaped.
My father turned his gaze toward the surrounding guests.
"It appears there has been a misunderstanding regarding my family's financial position," he continued.
He gestured toward his CFO.
"Blackwood Construction is currently operating under an emergency liquidity injection provided by the Vale Private Equity Fund," the CFO announced.
"Due to a breach of moral turpitude, we are triggering an immediate recall of all outstanding debt."
Vivian’s hand began to tremble.
The diamonds on her fingers caught the light as she clutched the ring.
"You... you would bankrupt this company over a simple engagement dispute?" she stammered.
My father looked at Ethan, who was standing by the balloon arch.
Ethan’s face was a portrait of shock.
"Your mother wasn't just insulting my daughter, Vivian," my father said, his eyes narrowing.
"She was insulting the hand that feeds you."
He turned his back on them.

"Lena, the car is waiting."
I walked out of that ballroom, leaving the Blackwoods to realize that their entire existence was a house of cards I had simply decided to tip over.
