Chapter 4 - A New Foundation

Spring arrived, bringing the scent of fresh earth.
The Blackwood estate had been sold at auction.
The funds had been redirected into a scholarship program for young students.
I walked through the park, watching children play.
I felt a sense of peace that had been absent during those months.
I no longer needed to hide my family name.
But I also didn't need to brandish it like a weapon.
My father joined me on a park bench.
"You've been offered a position on the Vale Board," he said, his voice proud.
"You have a natural aptitude for the business."
I smiled, looking out at the trees.
"I have my own plans, Dad."
"I want to build something that isn't focused on construction or private equity."
"I want to build a foundation that supports mental health for teenagers."
"Something that helps them build their own worth."
He watched me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
"A foundation built on value rather than vanity."
"That is a legacy I can get behind."
As we walked home, I caught a glimpse of myself in a store window.
The bruise on my cheek had long since faded.
It was replaced by the look of a woman who was no longer afraid.
I had learned the hard way that when you strip away the pretenses, you are left with the truth.
