Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

I left Mateo in the care of a trusted security detail, a group of men who knew the Rivas-Lerma history and were prepared to guard the hospital as if it were a fortress.

Martin Salgado met me outside, his face grim, the gray suit he wore offering no comfort against the encroaching darkness.

"The Carden family is trying to reach their lawyers," he said, his voice flat.

"They think they can bury this, just like they've buried everything else in Belle Meade."

"They don't know who we are," I replied, looking out at the city lights.

"They think I’m just an insurance salesman who got lucky."

We walked toward my car, the quiet hum of the city a contrast to the storm brewing in my mind.

"Who sent the message, Martin?" I asked.

He hesitated, the shadow of a doubt crossing his face.

"I don't know, Emiliano. But the encryption is military-grade, and the routing is untraceable."

"They know about the Trust," I said, a bitter taste rising in my throat.

"And they know that Mateo is the only living Rivas-Lerma who can trigger it."

We reached the car, and for a moment, I allowed myself to remember the life I had built—the pancakes, the Little League games, the laughter.

It all felt like a fragile, beautiful illusion.

I had tried to make my son ordinary, but his blood was a magnet for the kind of people who fed on that heritage.

"We need to move him," I said.

"If the Carden family wants a war, they can have one."

"But if the people I left behind come for him, I need you to be ready for something much worse."

"What are you saying?"

"I’m saying that Rogelio Carden is a small-time predator," I replied, my voice steady, the coldness of my resolve fully taking hold.

"But the people he’s connected to... those are the ones who turned me into the man I had to run away from."

We drove into the night, the road ahead stretching out like an endless, uncertain bridge, and for the first time in years, I didn't know if we would make it to the other side.
