Chapter 4 - The Dawn of Reckoning

The final confrontation happened at sunrise, the light of a new day illuminating the hospital room in a way that felt both judgmental and clarifying.
The doors swung open, but it wasn't the police or the Carden lawyers; it was a man I had not seen in fifteen years—my uncle, the man who had overseen the transition of the Rivas-Lerma empire after my father’s death.
He looked exactly the same, his face an immovable wall of experience, his presence commanding the very air of the room.
"You ran, Emiliano," he said, his voice a gravelly, resonant sound that seemed to echo through the silence.
"You ran because you thought you could find peace in the simplicity of a middle-class life."
"I did," I replied, my eyes locked on his.
"And I succeeded, until they touched my son."

He looked at Mateo, the boy sleeping peacefully in the bed, and for a moment, the wall cracked.
"The Cardens are a distraction," he said.
"They are the gnats that gather around the fire, but they don't see the fire itself."
"The people you are afraid of... the ones who sent the message... they have already found you."
The coldness in my chest deepened, turning into a resolve that felt like granite.
"Then we will show them what happens when they touch a Rivas-Lerma," I said, my voice steady, the fear finally replaced by the certainty of the war ahead.
My uncle nodded, his presence a dark, reassuring shadow in the room.
"We have prepared for this, Emiliano."
"The trust is open, the resources are in place, and your father’s enemies have already been notified of your location."
I watched as he turned to leave, the door clicking shut behind him, and looked at Mateo one final time.
He was the future, he was the legacy, and he was the only thing that mattered in the coming storm.
I wasn't just a father protecting his child; I was the guardian of an empire that was finally ready to assert itself.
The war had begun, and as the sun crested the horizon, I knew that the man I had pretended to be was gone.

The Rivas-Lerma legacy was back, and this time, it was going to be the ones who had hunted us who would be running for their lives.
The sunrise was bright, but the shadow of the fire was long, and I was finally ready to walk into it.
