Chapter 3 - The Price of Legacy

The days that followed were a surreal blur of legal maneuvering and tactical preparation.
The Rivas-Lerma Trust, a dormant entity that had sat in the archives for decades, suddenly became the most contested asset in the state.
I sat in a secure boardroom, the lawyers for the Carden family shouting across the table, their words a stream of threats and empty promises.
They didn't understand the documents I had brought with me.
They didn't see the signatures, the dates, or the iron-clad legal protections that bound my family’s wealth to Mateo’s blood.
"This is an absurdity," the head lawyer for the Cardens spat, his face red with indignation.
"You are an insurance salesman who hasn't been back to Texas in fifteen years!"
I leaned forward, the cold, sharp gaze that had once made my enemies tremble now directed at the man across from me.
"I am the heir to a legacy you have only ever known through hearsay," I said, my voice ringing out with a terrifying, absolute authority.
"And if you don't withdraw this petition, I will not only destroy the Carden real estate empire, I will ensure that every one of you who participated in this assault is held to the highest degree of the law."
The lawyer stared at me, the arrogance of his position faltering as he realized he was dealing with someone who was no longer playing by his rules.
He knew, as I did, that I had the resources, the motivation, and the history to make good on that threat.

I returned to the hospital to find Mateo stronger, his recovery a steady, miraculous process, but the shadow of the threat still hung over him.
He still spoke of Grandpa in hushed, frightened tones, his world having been irreversibly altered by the people who were supposed to love him.
I sat by his bed, the folder of Rivas-Lerma documents on my lap, and realized that I could no longer play the role of the ordinary father.
May you like
The ordinary father couldn't protect his son from the kind of people who were coming for us.
I reached into my pocket and touched the flash drive containing the evidence of my past life—the life I had buried—and knew the time for deception was over.
