Chapter 2 - Cold Evidentiary Truth

The flash of red and blue police lights swept across the snow-dusted grounds of the Hale estate, casting jagged shadows against the manicured hedges.

Deputy Aaron Bell stepped closer to Sloane Mercer, his eyes narrowing as Thomas Reed, the weathered groundskeeper, repeated his words under the harsh glare of the emergency floodlights.

"She raised both hands," Thomas reiterated, his voice unyielding as he pointed toward Sloane. "She pushed Mrs. Hale straight toward the pit. If Mrs. Evelyn hadn't grabbed her coat, that child would be gone."

Sloane’s carefully constructed composure shattered completely. She took a frantic step toward Grant, her manicured nails digging into the sleeve of his velvet blazer. "Grant, tell him! Tell this old man he’s confused! I slipped! You know how slippery the stone deck gets near the ice!"

Grant looked at Deputy Bell, then at the silent crowd of high-society guests who were watching the scene unfold like a slow-motion wreck. He opened his mouth, prepared to deploy the smooth, diplomatic charm that had carried him through every corporate crisis of his career.

"Deputy," Grant began, forcing a polite smile. "Thomas is getting older. His vision isn't what it used to be. My mother and my wife were both emotional tonight. It was an unfortunate misunderstanding—"

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Grant," Evelyn’s voice cut through the cold air like a steel blade.

She turned directly to Deputy Bell, her posture rigid despite her trembling hands. "I saw her push Nora. And my daughter-in-law has audio proof of what transpired leading up to the assault."

Nora, still resting on the stretcher while paramedics wrapped a thermal blanket around her shoulders, handed her unlocked phone directly to Deputy Bell. The digital recording icon was still visible, displaying the full seventeen-minute file.

"Play it, Deputy," Nora said quietly. Her voice was devoid of panic, carrying an authority that made Grant’s jaw clench. "Start from minute fourteen."

Deputy Bell pressed the audio file. The external speaker of his tactical radio amplified the recording, broadcasting it clearly across the silent estate lawn.

“He chose me,” Sloane’s recorded voice echoed, sharp, confident, and dripping with peppermint and champagne. “He’s been choosing me for six months, Nora. You’re just the incubator holding onto a last name that isn't yours anymore.”

A collective gasp swept through the gathered guests. Several prominent board members of the Hale Foundation backed away from Grant, their expressions shifting from concern to profound disgust.

Sloane froze, her hand sliding off Grant’s sleeve as if the fabric had suddenly burned her.

"Deputy," Nora continued, holding her uninjured hand over her belly, feeling the steady, rhythmic kicks of her unborn child. "I want to press full criminal charges against Sloane Mercer for attempted murder and assault. And I want a formal police report filed regarding my husband’s involvement as a co-conspirator."

Grant’s face turned an ashen, deathly pale shade. "Nora, stop this right now! You’re putting on a performance in front of the press!"

"The only performance tonight was yours, Grant," Evelyn said coldly, stepping directly between her son and the stretcher. "Deputy, do your job. Take Miss Mercer into custody."

Deputy Bell didn't hesitate. He pulled the steel handcuffs from his tactical belt and stepped toward Sloane. "Sloane Mercer, you are under arrest for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment."

As the cold steel snapped around Sloane’s wrists, she shrieked, thrashing against Deputy Bell’s grip. "Grant! Do something! Call the firm! You promised me I wouldn't go to jail for this!"

Grant reached into his coat for his phone, but Evelyn stepped forward, her silver hair catching the flashing blue lights as she stared her son down with absolute finality.

"If you make one phone call to use the Hale legal team to defend that woman," Evelyn whispered, her voice chillingly quiet, "I will execute the primary board clause tonight. You will be stripped of the CEO title before the sun comes up."
