Chapter 4 - The Secret Audit

By 8:00 AM the following morning, while Grant was frantically pacing the floor of his corner office in downtown Seattle, Nora sat in a private room at the Hale Foundation headquarters.

Beside her was Marcus Vance, the senior forensic auditor who had managed the Hale estate's private assets for three decades.

"We ran the initial sweep on the secondary accounts as Mrs. Evelyn requested," Marcus said, sliding three thick, leather-bound folders across the mahogany table. "What we found goes far beyond a marital affair, Nora."

Nora opened the top binder. The pages were filled with complex wire transfers, shell company registrations, and overseas real estate deeds.

"Over the last fourteen months," Marcus explained, pointing to a series of highlighted ledger lines, "Grant has systematically diverted over twelve million dollars from the Hale Development Trust into an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands."

"Under whose name?" Nora asked, her brows drawing together.

"Sloane Mercer," Marcus replied. "She isn't just his mistress, Nora. She’s an independent real estate consultant who was hired by Grant to manage the acquisition of the waterfront district."

Nora stared at the signatures on the contract documents. The handwriting was unmistakable. Sloane hadn't just been trying to force Nora out of Grant's life; she had been systematically stripping the Hale family trust clean before the baby was born.

Under the terms of the original Hale estate framework, the moment Nora gave birth to a direct heir, thirty percent of the development trust automatically transferred into a locked educational and property trust for the child.

Grant and Sloane knew that once the child arrived, the offshore diversions would be instantly flagged by the automated trust compliance system.

"She didn't just push me because she was jealous," Nora whispered, the horrific truth dawning on her. "She wanted to trigger an early emergency... she wanted the baby gone so the trust wouldn't lock."

Marcus nodded grimly. "If the pregnancy had been terminated tonight, the thirty percent transfer clause would have been voided. Grant would have maintained full discretionary control over the funds for another five years."

The door to the conference room opened smoothly, and Evelyn walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, her silver hair styled back into her signature twist.

"Did you find it?" Evelyn asked, looking directly at Marcus.

"Every dollar is accounted for, Mrs. Hale," Marcus confirmed. "The paper trail connects Grant’s personal signature to Sloane’s Cayman accounts."

Evelyn turned to Nora, her gaze cold and fierce. "The emergency board meeting is scheduled for ten o'clock. Grant thinks he's coming to present the quarterly earnings report."

"He has no idea we hold the key to his vault," Nora said, standing up despite the pain in her ankle, her voice firm and resolute. "I want to be in that room when you read the ledger."
