Chapter 3 - The Walls Close In

By noon that same day, the Cole Logistics corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago looked like a crime scene. White vans bearing the logos of federal investigators were parked outside, and agents were actively carrying boxes of digital drives and physical files out of the building.

I stood across the street in a quiet coffee shop, watching the empire I had helped analyze crumble into dust.

Daniel had spent the last four hours locked in an interrogation room with Detective Thorne and the federal prosecutors. Because he had struck me the night before, I had also filed a formal domestic violence report, ensuring that his bail would be heavily contested.

My phone rang. It was Arthur Vance.

"Victoria," Arthur said, his tone professional yet carrying a hint of fatherly pride. "The digital footprint you secured from his personal router was flawless. The prosecutors just verified the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. They’ve tied Daniel directly to twenty-four million dollars in corporate embezzlement."

"And the board?" I asked, sipping my tea.

"They are panicked. They want a full emergency meeting at 4:00 p.m. today. They know you hold the keys to the entire forensic report. Without your testimony and your data, the company will face a massive shareholder lawsuit that will bankrupt every single one of them."

"Tell them I’ll be there," I said coldly. "But I won't be coming as an auditor. I’ll be coming as the new majority shareholder."

Arthur paused on the line, a low chuckle escaping him. "You bought the defaulted debt options through your private trust, didn't you?"

"Daniel thought I was just managing spreadsheets, Arthur," I replied, looking out the window as another box of documents was loaded into the federal van. "He forgot that I know exactly how much his company is worth when it's broken into pieces."

I hung up and checked my reflection in the coffee shop window. The bruise on my cheek was turning a deep shade of purple, a physical reminder of the cost of my freedom. But the pain was gone. In its place was a cold, calculated clarity.

Daniel had spent three years trying to make me feel small. He had isolated me from my friends, limited my access to our joint accounts, and treated me like a decorative piece of furniture in his mansion. He truly believed that a woman's place was beneath his heel.

He was about to learn that when you push a woman to the floor, you give her the perfect view of your foundation—and exactly where to strike to make the whole house fall.
