Chapter 6 - The Trial and the Turncoat

Three months later, the federal courthouse was packed for the trial of the United States vs. Daniel Cole. Daniel sat at the defense table, looking terrible. His expensive suits no longer fit him properly, his hair was thinning from stress, and his arrogant smirk had been replaced by a look of permanent, desperate panic.

His defense attorney stood up, trying to paint a picture of a misunderstood businessman. "Your Honor, my client was under immense pressure. The funds were not stolen; they were simply moved to facilitate international trade expansion. His wife, driven by marital jealousy, has manipulated the data to destroy his reputation."

I sat in the front row of the gallery, completely unbothered.

The prosecutor stood up smoothly. "The government calls its next witness: Celeste Vale."

Daniel stiffened in his chair, his head snapping toward the side door as Celeste walked out. She was dressed professionally, her head held high. She didn't look at Daniel once as she took the stand and swore the oath.

For the next two hours, Celeste detailed every single interaction, every wire transfer, and every instruction Daniel had given her to hide the stolen funds. She presented audio recordings she had secretly made during their phone calls over the last three months—recordings I had taught her how to make safely.

"He told me he would protect me if I lied to the feds," Celeste testified, her voice clear and resonant. "He told me women are disposable in business, and that his wife was too stupid to ever figure out where the money went."

Daniel slammed his hands on the table, standing up. "You lying little whore!" he screamed, his face contorting with rage. "I gave you everything! You would be nothing without my money!"

"Order! Order in the court!" the judge shouted, banging the gavel repeatedly. "Mr. Cole, one more outburst and you will be removed from this courtroom!"

Daniel was pulled back down by his lawyers, his breathing ragged as he realized the truth. The two women he had tried to manipulate, abuse, and play against each other had joined forces to completely destroy him.

When it was my turn to take the stand, I walked up with total confidence. I didn't focus on the affair. I didn't focus on the emotional pain. I presented the numbers—the cold, undeniable truth of his greed. And when the prosecutor asked me about the night of the incident, I turned directly to the jury and recounted the exact words he had spoken to me before he struck me.

"He told me to know my place," I said, looking Daniel dead in the eyes. "And I found it. Right here, watching him lose everything."
