Plot twist

Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

The Cole Logistics board meeting was a room full of dying men. Twelve older executives in tailored suits sat around a massive mahogany table, sweating through their shirts as the company’s stock price plummeted on the live ticker display on the wall.

When I walked into the room, the silence was immediate.

"Victoria," the board chairman, Charles Montgomery, stood up, his face filled with desperate relief. "Thank God you’re here. Arthur Vance told us you have the full data set. We need to issue a statement to the press immediately stating that this was an isolated incident by Daniel Cole alone, and that the company’s core financials are stable."

"But they aren't stable, Charles," I said, walking to the head of the table and placing my laptop down. "Daniel didn't just steal twenty-four million dollars. He leveraged the company’s primary logistics contracts as collateral for a high-risk secondary loan from a private equity firm in Europe."

The board members looked at each other, their faces turning pale.

"What loan?" Charles stammered. "That requires board approval!"

"He forged your signature, Charles," I said, flashing the document onto the main screen. "The loan defaulted forty-eight hours ago. The private equity firm has already moved to seize the controlling shares of Cole Logistics."

"Oh my God," one of the board members whispered, burying his head in his hands. "We are completely ruined. The trading will be halted by tomorrow morning. We’re bankrupt."

"Not necessarily," I said, leaning forward, my hands resting firmly on the table. "The private equity firm that bought Daniel’s defaulted debt options isn't European. It’s an American-registered trust called V.V. Holdings."

Charles frowned, squinting at the screen. "V.V. Holdings? Who owns that?"

"I do," I said clearly.

The room went so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioning.

"You?" Charles whispered. "Victoria, you’re Daniel’s wife. You’re an auditor."

"I was Daniel’s wife. The divorce papers were filed at 9:00 this morning," I replied, standing up straight. "And I am no longer just an auditor. As of right now, V.V. Holdings owns fifty-one percent of the voting shares in this company. Which means, gentlemen, you all work for me now."

I looked around the room, seeing the exact same men who used to look past me at corporate dinners, the men who used to laugh at Daniel’s sexist jokes while I sat silently beside him.

"Here are my terms," I continued, my voice commanding the entire room. "Charles, you will resign immediately. The rest of the board will remain to oversee the transition, but your salaries will be cut by forty percent until the embezzled funds are recovered from Daniel’s personal assets. If you accept, I will inject ten million dollars of private liquidity into the company tomorrow morning to stabilize the stock. If you refuse, I will let this company burn to the ground by Friday."

Charles looked at the screen, then looked at the faces of his terrified colleagues. He slowly lowered himself back into his chair.

"What do you want us to do, Ms. Vale?" he asked, his voice defeated.

"Call a press conference," I said, packing up my laptop. "Let the world know that Cole Logistics has a new CEO."
