Chapter 5 - The Eviction Notice at Midnight

By 8:00 that evening, the Walker family had returned to our suburban home in an expensive local taxi, having been forced to pay cash after all their credit lines were declined.

The rain was falling in hard, steady sheets across the driveway as the taxi pulled up to the grand front entrance.

Jack hurried out of the cab, carrying his luggage, with Carol and Ashley right behind him, their faces twisted with exhaustion and anger.

But when Jack reached the front porch, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing beside the front door were two uniformed county sheriff deputies, flanked by a lock-smith who was actively drilling out the primary deadbolt.

A bright, neon-orange paper notice was taped directly across the front glass: PROPERTY REPOSSESSED BY VANCE TRUST LLC — NO TRESPASSING.

"What is the meaning of this?" Carol shrieked, running up the porch steps. "This is my son’s house! You can't lock us out of our own home!"

"The property is owned entirely by Vance Trust LLC, ma'am," the lead deputy replied coldly, holding up a certified court order. "The primary trustee, Mrs. Megan Vance-Walker, has officially revoked all residential permits for the listed occupants."

Jack rushed forward, his hands shaking as he held up his house key. "I live here! My name is on the utility bills!"

"Your utility accounts were cancelled at 3:00 p.m., sir," the deputy stated flatly. "You have thirty minutes to retrieve your personal clothing in a single duffel bag under our supervision."

Tiffany, who had followed them in a secondary cab, took one look at the sheriff deputies, pulled her luggage back into the backseat, and told the driver to take her back to her apartment downtown.

She didn't offer a single word of comfort to Jack; she simply blocked his number as the cab pulled away into the rainy night.

Jack stood on the wet porch, watching his mistress abandon him, while his mother wept loudly on the lawn and his sister stared at him with pure, unadulterated fury.
