Chapter 2 - The Ground Freeze at Gate C

The formal financial division hearing took place three weeks later inside a high-rise legal office in downtown Manhattan.

Jack sat at the defense table, wearing a wrinkled, second-hand suit, his hair disheveled, his face hollow from three weeks of living in a cheap airport motel.

Carol and Ashley sat behind him in the gallery, their expensive designer coats gone, replaced by simple clothing they had bought after their secondary card lines were permanently frozen.

My legal team, led by Gerald, laid out three thick binders containing the complete financial history of our ten-year marriage.

"Your Honor," Gerald stated, turning to the judge. "Mr. Jack Walker believed he was funding his family's lifestyle through his medical salary."

"In reality, his medical salary barely covered his private student loan interest."

"Over eight million dollars was injected into his accounts directly from the Vance Private Trust—funding his luxury sports car, his mother's country club dues, and his sister's boutique business."

The judge reviewed the certified bank logs, her expression shifting from professional neutrality to profound, cold disgust.

"Mr. Walker," the judge said, looking down from the bench. "You engaged in a prolonged, systematic campaign of marital deception while completely living off your spouse's private inheritance."

The court issued an immediate, unappealable divorce decree that awarded me one hundred percent of the residential assets, revoked Jack’s access to any corporate accounts, and ordered him to pay back three hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized secondary trust withdrawals.

Jack looked across the table at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic longing. "Megan... please. Just give me a chance. I can work it off. I can fix this."

I looked at him, then at his mother and sister, feeling zero pity, zero anger, and zero regret.
