Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Collapses

The silence that followed my text message was deafening. Daniel still stood with his hand slightly raised, a smug, dictatorial grin plastered across his face. Vanessa was looking down at the spilled coffee on the marble floor, waiting for me to drop to my knees with a rag. Margaret was calmly sipping her tea, completely oblivious to the fact that the very ground beneath her estate was shifting.
"Well?" Daniel demanded, stepping closer, his breath smelling of expensive cigars and arrogance. "Are you going to start cleaning, or do I need to remind you who provides for you again?"
I looked down at my phone. The countdown was over.
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone buzzed loudly. Then Margaret’s phone chimed. Within seconds, a cacophony of ringtones and notification alerts filled the kitchen.
Daniel frowned, pulling his phone from his pocket. "What the hell? A security alert from the corporate office?" He swiped his screen, his brow furrowing. "A temporary freeze on all operational accounts? That's impossible. Must be a system glitch."
"It's not a glitch, Daniel," I said, my voice steady, devoid of the fear he expected. I wiped the small bead of blood from my lip with the back of my hand.
"Shut up, Victoria," Vanessa snapped, scrolling through her own phone. "Daniel, my Amex black card just got declined for my Aspen booking! Fix it!"
"I can't," Daniel muttered, his face suddenly turning a sickly shade of pale. "The bank... the primary liquidity fund for Cole Hospitality just dropped to zero balance. It says 'Account Restricted by Parent Organization'."
Margaret finally stood up from the table, her perfect posture stiffening. "Daniel, what is the meaning of this? Call the board. Call the regional director."
"He can't reach them," I said, leaning back against the counter, right next to the wedding ring I had just discarded. "Because the board answers to me."
Before Daniel could scream at me again, the heavy oak double doors of the estate's main entrance burst open. The sound echoed through the high ceilings. The heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots and polished dress shoes marched into the grand hallway.
A woman dressed in a flawless, tailored black pantsuit walked into the kitchen. Her hair was pulled back into a sharp, professional bun. It was Evelyn Shaw, my chief legal counsel and head of corporate security for Vale Meridian Holdings. Behind her stood four large, uniformed security personnel wearing tactical gear bearing the VM logo.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Daniel’s father, Arthur Cole, finally spoke up, slamming his newspaper down. "This is private property! Get these thugs out of my house!"
Evelyn didn't even look at him. She walked straight to me, ignoring the Cole family entirely, and handed me a pristine white silk handkerchief. "Your lip is bleeding, Ms. Vale. Shall I have the medical team examine the injury for the police report?"
"The police?" Daniel stammered, stepping back. "Wait... Evelyn Shaw? From the Wall Street journals? Why are you here? And why did you call her Ms. Vale? Her name is Victoria Cole!"
"Her name is Victoria Vale," Evelyn corrected him, her voice ice-cold as she turned to face the family. "And as of exactly three minutes ago, the lease agreement between Cole Hospitality and Vale Meridian Holdings has been terminated due to a material breach of contract and moral turpitude clauses. Furthermore, this estate—which is registered under the asset portfolio of VM Properties LLC—is being secured."
"You're insane!" Vanessa shrieked. "This is our family home! My grandfather built this company!"
"Your grandfather sold sixty-five percent of the controlling shares to an anonymous investment trust seven years ago to save himself from bankruptcy," Evelyn replied smoothly, opening a thick leather folder. "That trust is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale Meridian. Ms. Vale is the sole owner and Chairperson."
Daniel looked from Evelyn to me, his eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and growing terror. "Victoria... what is she talking about? You’re an independent operations consultant. I reviewed your background check myself!"
"You reviewed the background check I allowed you to see, Daniel," I said, stepping away from the counter. I looked at the spilled coffee on the floor, then looked up at Vanessa. "You wanted someone to clean this floor? I suggest you get started. Because by tomorrow morning, you won't even be able to afford the soap."
Daniel grabbed my arm again, his grip tight and desperate. "You're lying! This is some twisted game because I hit you! I'm your husband, Victoria! You can't do this to me!"
The security guard behind Evelyn moved instantly, grabbing Daniel’s shoulder and twisting his arm back with clinical precision. Daniel groaned, forced down to his knees.
"Do not touch Ms. Vale," the guard warned.
Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. "Daniel! Victoria, please, stop this madness! He is your husband! We are your family!"
"Family doesn't raise a hand to me," I whispered, looking down at Daniel as he knelt on the floor—the very position he had tried to force me into just minutes ago. "And family certainly doesn't steal from me. Evelyn, begin the audit immediately. Lock down every restaurant, every hotel, and every corporate office bearing the Cole name. I want a full forensic accounting by tomorrow morning."

"Understood, Ms. Vale," Evelyn nodded.
I walked out of the kitchen without looking back, leaving the Cole family standing in the wreckage of their own arrogance. The game had just begun.
