Chapter 5 - The Criminal Trial & The Betrayal

Three weeks after the press conference, the federal courthouse became the final battleground. The Cole family’s empire was completely gone; their assets had been seized, their properties foreclosed, and their names dragged through the mud of every major publication in the country.

But the true destruction of the Cole family didn't come from me. It came from within.

I sat in the observation gallery of the courtroom, dressed in a sharp white blazer, watching the preliminary hearing. Daniel and his father sat at the defense table, looking haggard and defeated. Their high-priced defense attorneys had abandoned them weeks ago when their funds dried up, replaced by court-appointed representation.

Across the room, sitting at the prosecution's table, were Margaret and Vanessa.

When faced with twenty years in a federal penitentiary, the "old-fashioned, loving family" Daniel boasted about had torn each other apart in less than forty-eight hours.

The prosecutor stood up, addressing the judge. "Your Honor, the government has reached a plea agreement with defendants Margaret Cole and Vanessa Cole. In exchange for full cooperation and testimony regarding the operational fraud led by Arthur and Daniel Cole, the government recommends a reduced sentence of probation and community service."

Daniel turned around in his chair, his face twisted in pure rage. "You snakes!" he screamed at his mother and sister, slamming his hands on the table. "You knew about every single dollar! You spent the money! Vanessa, you bought your damn yacht with that money!"

"Silence in the court!" the judge banged the gavel loudly.

"They set us up, Daniel!" Arthur groaned, burying his face in his hands. "They signed the papers. They gave the feds the private keys to the Cayman accounts."

Vanessa wouldn't even look at her brother. She kept her eyes glued to the floor, her face pale. She had traded her brother and father's freedom to save herself from a prison cell. The absolute loyalty they demanded from me on the second day of my marriage didn't even exist among themselves.

As the judge ordered a recess to finalize the paperwork, the court security officers stepped forward to put handcuffs on Daniel and Arthur, preparing to transport them back to the holding facility.

As Daniel was led down the center aisle of the courtroom, he stopped right in front of my bench. The guards pulled at his chain, but he resisted, staring down at me with hollow, desperate eyes.

"You did this," he whispered, his voice trembling. "You planned this from the very beginning. You never loved me."

I stood up slowly, looking at the man who had struck me across the face just weeks prior because I asked his sister to clean a plate.

"You're right, Daniel. I didn't love you," I said softly, so only he could hear. "But I gave you a chance. If you had been a good husband, if you had been an honest partner, I would have shared my empire with you. I would have saved your family's failing company legally. But you wanted a servant. You wanted someone you could control and abuse."

"Victoria, please..." he whispered, a tear escaping his eye. "Talk to the prosecutor. Tell them to drop the charges against me. I'll do anything. I'll sign anything."

"It's too late, Daniel. Your place isn't at my table anymore," I said, stepping past him. "Your place is in a cell."
