Chapter 3 - The Shadows of a Past Life

Marcus didn't fight back; he knew exactly what the "Ghost of Berlin" was capable of when backed into a corner.

He slowly raised his hands, a twisted, bloody smile stretching across his scarred face.

"I didn't choose this contract, Elena," he choked out, the pressure of my knife drawing a thin bead of crimson on his neck.

"Your old director, Arthur Vance, is the one who found your new identity in Illinois."

The name hit me harder than any physical blow ever could.

Arthur Vance was not just my former agency handler; he was Chloe’s biological father, the man who had abandoned us to join a global syndicate.

"He doesn't want the girl dead," Marcus whispered, his eyes darting toward the blinking heart monitor.

"He wanted her hospitalized so you would be forced to use your old agency security clearance to look into the university network."

"The moment you breached Bradley University's firewalls ten minutes ago, Arthur locked onto your live IP address."

I realized with a sudden, freezing horror that the ambush on my daughter hadn't been a failed hit.
