Chapter 4 - The Trap at the Archive

By 3:00 a.m., the local police had removed Marcus from the hospital wing under a classified federal transport order.

I stood by Chloe’s bedside, watching her chest rise and fall rhythmically as the heavy sedatives finally took full effect.

"Elena," Dr. Harrison whispered, entering the room with a secure satellite phone.

"A black SUV just pulled into the parking lot of the local archive building where you work."

Arthur knew that if I was going to hide my old intelligence files, I would keep them buried deep within the historical basement of the city database.

I kissed Chloe’s forehead, checking the secure lock on her door before turning to the doctor with a completely expressionless face.

"Watch her, Harrison," I said quietly, pulling my old tactical gloves from my leather bag.

"I have some active files I need to permanently delete."

The drive to the archive took less than ten minutes through the pouring Illinois rain.

The building was completely dark, but the lock on the side entrance had already been neatly melted away with a chemical torch.

I stepped through the threshold, stepping over the shattered glass, my senses hyper-attuned to the faint hum of the server room in the basement.
