Chapter 4 - The Unravelling at Memorial Hospital

By 1:00 AM, my hand was stitched and bandaged, and I sat in a private recovery room on the fourth floor of Charlotte Memorial.
Dr. Rao sat in the armchair beside my bed, drinking a paper cup of black coffee, while Detective Miller of the CMPD Special Victims Unit sat across from us with a digital voice recorder.
The door burst open without a knock.
My father walked in first, followed by my mother and two men in expensive navy suits—the Mercer family’s corporate defense attorneys.
"Detective Miller," my father boomed, stepping forward with his hands out. "I demand you cease this unauthorized questioning immediately. My daughter is under severe psychological stress and is not competent to give a legal statement."
Detective Miller didn't stand up. He slowly turned off his recorder and looked at my father with absolute disdain.
"Mr. Mercer," Detective Miller said flatly. "Your daughter is twenty-seven years old, mentally competent, and currently the primary victim in an active felony assault investigation."
"She’s a liar!" my mother cried out, her voice shrill, her champagne dress rumpled. "She ruined Nolan’s special night! Claire’s family is threatening to call off the wedding because of her dramatic performance!"
I looked at my mother. Truly looked at her.
I saw the fine lines around her eyes, the pristine pearl earrings, the designer makeup, and the complete, utter lack of a mother's love.
"I didn't ruin your night, Mom," I said, my voice rising steady and clear. "Nolan threw me onto a pile of broken glass because my wheelchair ruined his aesthetic."
"And two years ago, Nolan drove my car into a concrete bridge while intoxicated, and you and Dad forced me to lie to the insurance investigators so he wouldn't go to prison."
The defense attorneys exchanged a rapid, terrified glance.

"Leah! Shut your mouth!" my father roared, taking an aggressive step toward my bed.
Dr. Rao stood up instantly, stepping directly between my father and my bed. "Step back, Mr. Mercer. One more step and I will have hospital security remove you for intimidation of a witness."
