Chapter 5 - The Video That Shook Charlotte

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the video recorded by Dr. Priya Rao at Skyline Hall had leaked onto local news platforms and social media networks.
It was crystal clear.
The forty-five-second clip showed Nolan Mercer smiling arrogance into the camera, placing his boots on my wheel locks, grabbing my arms as I pleaded with him to stop, and violently yanking me sideways until my body slammed into the acrylic platform and shattered champagne glasses.
It captured my mother checking her watch, my father turning his head away, and Nolan laughing as blood pooled around my hand: "Look what you made me do. You ruined my engagement photos."
The public reaction was swift, ruthless, and absolute.
By noon, the luxury hotel group where Nolan worked issued a formal statement announcing his immediate termination from his position as project development director.
Claire Whitmore’s family released a private press notice confirming that the engagement had been permanently called off, and their corporate investment group was withdrawing all financial backing from the Mercer family’s consulting firm.
Sitting in my hospital room, watching the television news ticker scroll across the screen, I felt no joy.
Only a deep, cleansing release—as if a heavy stone that had rested on my chest for two long years had finally been lifted away.
The door opened softly, and Claire Whitmore walked into the room.
She wasn't wearing silk or pearls. She wore a simple sweater and jeans, her eyes red from crying, carrying a large bouquet of white lilies.
"Leah..." Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "I am so... so sorry."
She set the flowers on the table and sat in the chair beside my bed, burying her face in her hands.
"I didn't know," Claire sobbed. "They told me you were bitter... they told me you hated Nolan because you were jealous of his success. I had no idea what they were doing to you."

I reached out with my uninjured hand and gently touched her arm. "You don't need to apologize, Claire. You were a victim of their lies, too."
"He’s a monster," Claire said, looking up at me with fierce clarity. "And I am going to testify against him."
