Chapter 3 - THE GHOST OF THE ALBORAN SEA

The memory of the dark, freezing water always returned to me whenever the rain tapped against the glass windows of my secure terminal.

Five years ago, I was the youngest lieutenant commander in the Spanish Navy, tasked with evaluating the sea trials of the new Soler-built defense fleet.

I had found the crack in the main pressure hull—a systematic, deliberate reduction in the steel grade to inflate my father’s profit margins by fifteen percent.

When I confronted him in his private study, he didn't raise his voice; he simply called his security director, and forty-eight hours later, my ship's boiler room erupted in a ball of white-hot steam.

I survived by clawing my way through the burning wreckage of the engine bay, my skin melting against the molten deck plates before I plunged into the Alboran Sea.

They declared me dead, a tragic casualty of a routine operational error, and Patricia, my mother, had immediately signed the non-disclosure waivers in exchange for a secondary estate in Marbella.

But the navy did not bury me.

Admiral Rueda had pulled me from the black water himself, locking my medical files under a level-four state security seal.

"For five years, they believed they had successfully bought your silence, Eva," Rueda said, pouring two cups of strong, black coffee as we sat in the secure operations office.

"They used your name as a cautionary tale of mental instability to protect their standing with the parliamentary committee."

"But they never realized that while they were drinking champagne at the gala, you were analyzing every single invoice they routed through Panama."

"We found the secondary steel registries, Captain," Sienna, our lead forensic analyst, added, placing a thick folder of encrypted transaction logs on the metal desk.

"Your father’s company was buying sub-standard industrial scrap metal from Eastern European yards, then certifying it as military-grade hull plating."

"The ESPS Lepanto was nothing more than a floating steel coffin designed to generate dividends for your brother's luxury yacht accounts."

I took a slow, deliberate sip of the bitter coffee, my eyes fixed on the digital schematics of the destroyer.

"I am not going to let them settle this with a private arbitration, Tomás," I whispered, my fingers clenching the edge of the folder.

"They wanted a monster."

"So they are going to get the exact beast they manufactured."
