Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE SOLER DYNASTY

The ninety-six hours of arrogant legal defenses the Soler family had prepared collapsed into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the military police closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the steel restraints closing around Arturo’s wrists was the most satisfying sound of my life.

"Eva, please!" Inés screamed, her body shaking violently as she was pinned against the wooden railing by two heavily built female officers.

"We didn't know about the boiler room! Dad told us it was an accident! We are your sisters! We share the same blood!"

"My blood is on the deck of the ESPS Lepanto, Inés," I said, looking down at her with dead, unyielding eyes.

"And you were perfectly happy to laugh at the scars it left behind as long as the diamonds kept sparkling on your wrist."

The state moved with a clinical, relentless speed that left no room for appeal or political intervention.

By Friday afternoon, the Soler Maritime Group was officially dissolved by supreme judicial decree, its assets completely liquidated to fund a permanent medical trust for the survivors of the naval fleet.

The luxury estates in Cádiz, Marbella, and Madrid were seized and sold at public auction, their contents cleared by commercial moving crews.

My brother, Carlos, was sentenced to thirty years in a federal maximum-security facility for corporate manslaughter and treason.

Patricia and Inés were stripped of their corporate dividends, left with nothing but the minimal state pension they had once mocked me for receiving.

I stood on the stone balcony of the San Fernando Naval Club, watching the rain wash the chalk drawings of the estate from the pavement below.

The cold ballroom and the cruel laughter of my family's elite guests had burned away the final remnants of my childhood submission, transforming me into the sovereign master of my own destiny.

The old script of my silence was permanently destroyed.
