Chapter 2 - The Sealed Evidence Bag

Adrian stood rooted to the linoleum floor of the hospital corridor, his jaw slack as the federal agent held the gold-and-blue badge mere inches from his eyes.
Special Agent Marcus Vance, a lead investigator for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights and Violent Crimes Division, didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. His presence alone commanded absolute authority.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Adrian stammered, his polished, country-club confidence evaporating into thin air. "My wife had an accident at home. She got confused during a panic attack—"
"Mr. Mercer," my father, Arthur Sterling, interrupted calmly. He stepped forward, his eyes cold and unyielding. "You believed Claire was just a quiet girl from a modest family. You assumed 'retired educators' meant helpless victims."
My father had retired two years ago as the Deputy Director of Federal Law Enforcement Operations. My mother, Eleanor, was a high-ranking federal prosecutor who had spent thirty years dismantling organized financial crime syndicates across the country. I had deliberately kept my background private, wanting a quiet life away from the high-stakes world my parents operated in. I wanted Adrian to love me for who I was, not who my family was.
Instead, his family had seen my modesty as weakness.
"You altered a medical record on hospital grounds, Mr. Mercer," Agent Vance stated, signaling to the two plainclothes officers behind him. "That is a direct attempt to obstruct a federal investigation into assault resulting in severe bodily harm."
In the emergency room, my mother sat beside my bed, gently taking my hand. The bandages covered both of my eyes, but the warmth of her touch brought the first real tear of relief since the chemical hit my face.
"They think they own this city, Mom," I whispered, my voice raw from screaming. "They think money buys everything."
"They are about to learn what true authority looks like, sweetheart," my mother replied softly, her voice laced with iron. "Your father has already issued an emergency federal preservation order for the entire Mercer estate."
Just then, the door to the room opened quietly. Soft footsteps approached.
"Miss Claire?"
It was Rosa.
She was trembling, clutching her worn leather purse tightly against her chest. She looked past my parents, her eyes filled with tears when she saw my bandaged face.
"Rosa..." I breathed. "You came."
"I could not let them do this to you," Rosa said in broken English, reaching into her purse. She pulled out a heavy, clear plastic bag sealed tightly at the top. Inside was the red-labeled industrial spray bottle, completely intact, along with a wiped-down glass coffee cup.
"Mrs. Mercer told me to throw this into the commercial incinerator behind the estate," Rosa whispered, her voice steadying. "She thought I did. But I hid it in my car. The security cameras in the kitchen were working, too. I transferred the raw video file to a flash drive before Adrian tried to wipe the central server."

Agent Vance stepped into the room, taking the sealed bag with gloved hands. "This is a pristine chain of custody, Rosa. You just secured the foundation of this case."
Across the hallway, Adrian’s phone rang endlessly. It was his mother, Evelyn, calling from the estate, entirely unaware that the trap had already sprung.
