Chapter 4 - The Raid on the Mercer Estate

Within hours, news of the raid on the prestigious Mercer estate exploded across regional and national media outlets. The sight of Evelyn Mercer—the city's prominent socialite and philanthropist—being led down her front steps in steel handcuffs swept through news channels like wildfire.
While federal agents cataloged evidence inside the house, a secondary team from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) began digging into Mercer Logistics, the multi-million-dollar company owned by Adrian's family.
My mother, Eleanor, sat in a secure conference room at the federal building, reviewing the financial records that had been seized during the raid.
"They thought they were untouchable," Eleanor noted, sliding a stack of bank statements toward Agent Vance. "Look at these secondary ledgers. Evelyn hasn't just been running a logistics firm. She’s been systematically laundering money through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to evade federal taxes for over a decade."
"They used the family trust to pay off local officials," Vance observed, highlighting several suspicious wire transfers. "Including the precinct captain who tried to suppress the initial hospital call."
Meanwhile, back at the specialized eye clinic downtown, the bandages were finally removed from my face.
The light was blinding at first. I squinted, tears streaming down my cheeks as the ophthalmologist carefully inspected my corneas under a high-powered microscope.
"You were extremely fortunate, Claire," the doctor said, a genuine smile breaking through his serious demeanor. "Because the paramedics flushed your eyes immediately with saline, the chemical burn was kept to the superficial epithelial layer. With specialized treatment, your vision will make a full recovery."
I closed my eyes, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for days.
My mother walked into the room, wrapping her arms around me. "The doctor called us, sweetheart. You're going to be okay."
"Where is Adrian?" I asked, my voice steady.
"He's currently in federal custody without bail," my mother replied coldly. "He tried to offer the arresting officers a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bribe to drop the evidence tampering charges. He just added a federal bribery felony to his indictment."

I looked at my reflection in the small mirror beside the bed. My eyes were still red and raw, but the fear was completely gone.
"I want to be in that courtroom," I said. "I want them to look at me when the verdict is read."
