Plot twist

Chapter 3 - The Cracks in the Designer Mirror

By 8:30 the following morning, the sun broke bright and sharp over the quiet suburban neighborhood.

I sat at my kitchen counter, sipping warm chamomile tea, when the loud, aggressive rumble of an engine rattled my front windows.

A brand-new, white luxury SUV pulled into my driveway, its tires screeching slightly against the pavement.

The car door slammed shut, and footsteps marched up the wooden porch steps.

It wasn't Kyle.

It was Madison, flanked by her mother, Evelyn, both of them wearing expensive sunglasses and carrying designer leather handbags.

Madison didn't knock politely; she banged her manicured nails against the wooden door frame.

"Evelyn! Open this door right now!" Madison shouted, her voice shrill and dripping with manufactured urgency.

I took my time setting my cup down, smoothing my cardigan, and opening the door with a slow, deliberate composure.

Madison pushed past me into the hallway, her eyes darting around my simple living room like a hawk searching for prey.

"Where is it?" Madison demanded, her arms crossed tightly over her designer dress. "Kyle told me everything! He said Frank left a two-million-dollar deed!"

Evelyn stepped inside behind her daughter, her sharp, condescending gaze sweeping over my modest furniture with pure disdain.

"Honestly, Evelyn," her mother sneered, "hiding a commercial property deed inside a cheap, hand-knitted rag? That is completely absurd and unhinged."

"We need that certificate immediately," Madison insisted, stepping closer to me. "Our financial advisor needs to clear the asset transfer before the baby arrives next month!"

I looked at my daughter-in-law, then at her mother, feeling a profound, icy quiet settle over my heart.

"The 'cheap rag' you're talking about is a handmade blanket I spent four months stitching, Madison," I said, my voice completely flat.

"And as for the deed... it belongs to a private trust."

"A trust that I control."
