Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confrontation

Madison let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that echoed poorly off the small hallway walls.

"You control it?" Madison mocked, pointing a finger at my chest. "You're an old seamstress who lives in a tiny house! You don't know the first thing about commercial real estate!"

"My husband gave me that card!" she shrieked. "Kyle is Frank's son! That money belongs to our baby!"

"Frank built that legacy for a child who would be taught kindness, Madison," I replied, not stepping back an inch.

"Not for a woman who throws handmade gifts into the trash to get likes on a social media video."

Evelyn stepped forward, her expensive perfume heavy in the air, her tone dropping into a threatening, legal register.

"Listen to me very carefully, Evelyn," her mother warned. "My husband is a senior partner at a corporate firm downtown."

"If you don't hand over that bearer certificate by five o'clock today, we will file a formal lawsuit for estate concealment and elder fraud."

"We will take this house, we will freeze your bank accounts, and you will never see your grandson after he is born!"

The room went completely still, the threat hanging between us like an iron blade.

Before I could answer, the front door swung open wide.

Kyle stood in the threshold, his eyes red from a lack of sleep, his hair unkempt, holding a large manila envelope in his shaking hands.

He looked at his wife, then at his mother-in-law, his face a mask of absolute, devastating disillusionment.

"You don't have to threaten her, Evelyn," Kyle said, his voice quiet, heavy, and completely broken.

"Because there is no money left in my account anyway."
