Chapter 2 - The Shadow at the Threshold

The door opened without a sound, the heavy oak frame gliding inward against the marble floor.

I expected Theodore.

I expected my groom to walk in with his usual hurried grace, checking his gold watch, reminding me that Senator Vance was waiting in the second row and that the photographer needed the family portrait before the lighting faded.

Instead, a man stood in the doorway who looked as if he had been carved out of the storm raging outside St. Cecilia’s Chapel.

He wore a dark, tailored suit, his white shirt open at the collar, revealing dark, intricate ink trailing up the side of his neck—a striking, geometric tattoo of intertwined thorned vines and a black rose.

He wasn't an Ashford. He didn't carry their polished, fragile air or their rehearsed country-club smiles.

He was Dominic Vance.

The undisputed head of the Vance Syndicate—the shadow network that controlled Boston’s shipping docks, historical trusts, and private financial clearinghouses. The man the Ashford family secretly begged for capital behind closed doors while publicly dismissing his name at galas.

Behind him, Marguerite and Priscilla were still hovering near the hallway, holding their champagne flutes.

Marguerite’s smile vanished the moment she saw him. Her hand twitched, the silver dressmaker’s shears clicking softly against her ring.

"Dominic?" Marguerite stammered, forcing her posture straight. "This is a private suite. The bridal party is preparing—"

Dominic didn't look at her. His dark, amber eyes swept across the room, past the ivory silk gown, past the mirror, and landed directly on the twenty-four pieces of shredded lace clutched in my cotton-gloved hands.

The air in the room grew heavy, suffocatingly quiet.

"Do you have any idea," Dominic spoke, his voice a low, terrifying growl that rattled the glass in the antique windows, "whose veil you just cut?"
