Chapter 3 - The Bloodline of the Black Rose

Marguerite sneered, though the color had begun to drain from her manicured cheeks.
"It was an old piece of fabric Cora brought from her studio," Marguerite lied smoothly, waving her hand as if clearing away dust. "It was falling apart. I simply helped her replace it with an authentic French lace veil worthy of the Ashford name."
Dominic stepped into the suite. He moved with a quiet, lethal precision that made even the old floorboards refrain from creaking.
He knelt beside me on the Persian rug, his shadow casting over the ivory silk of my dress. He didn't look at me with pity. He looked at the lace in my hands with a reverence that turned my blood to ice.
"That 'old piece of fabric,'" Dominic said quietly, reaching out with his bare, calloused hand to gently lift a torn strip containing the strange sequence of knots, "is the Vance Legacy Veil."
"It was hand-stitched in 1842 for the matriarch of our founding estate."
"It carries the encrypted family lineage code—the private trust key that validates the sole ownership of the Boston Harbor Docks."
Priscilla let out a nervous, breathless laugh. "That’s impossible! Cora is an orphan! She found that old rag in a estate sale box in Vermont!"
"She didn't find it, Priscilla," Dominic said, slowly rising to his feet, his massive frame towering over both women.
"Her grandmother was Helena Vance."
"The woman your father systematically swindled out of her historical property rights thirty years ago."
I sat on the floor, my breath catching in my chest as the pieces of my entire life suddenly clicked together into a terrifying, beautiful picture.
The nine months I had spent restoring the veil...

The strange, unrecorded knots I had uncovered under my lamps...
It hadn't been a random restoration project. It was my mother's final inheritance, sent back to me through an anonymous trust to restore before I ever made the mistake of marrying into the family that had stolen our name.
