Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Presidential Suite

The rain had stopped over Boston, leaving behind a cold, reflective mist that coated the floor-to-ceiling glass of the presidential suite.

Thaddeus lay sleeping beside me, his arm draped possessively over my waist, his breathing rhythmic and deep.

He looked peaceful.

He looked like a man who believed the world was a chessboard designed entirely for his amusement.

I gently lifted his arm, slipped out from beneath the silk sheets, and stood barefoot on the plush carpet. My heart wasn't pounding. My hands weren't shaking.

A strange, beautiful clarity had settled inside my mind.

For seven years, I had believed Thaddeus when he told me that our secrecy was necessary to protect my safety from his conservative corporate board.

I had believed him when he said the Hayes family name would bring scandal to his father's shipping empire.

I had hidden in plain sight, living in luxury hotels, dining in private backrooms, and accepting his promises like breadcrumbs handed to a starving person.

I walked over to the mahogany desk near the balcony doors, where his personal leather briefcase rested beside his gold watch.

I didn't need to crack a combination lock; I had spent seven years watching his fingers dance across security keypads.

The latch clicked open with a soft, mechanical snap.

Inside lay a black leather binder marked with the official seal of the Vance Grand Group, along with a secondary set of brass keys tied to a golden ring.

I opened the binder.

Right on the primary page sat a land acquisition contract dated three weeks ago—a document that transferred thirty percent of my late mother’s estate, the Hayes Harbor Terminal, straight into a private corporate trust owned by Thaddeus Vance and Seraphina Sterling.

The marriage wasn't just a betrayal of love.

It was a cold, calculated merger designed to consolidate control over Boston's primary maritime shipping hub before my twenty-eighth birthday next week—the day my mother's trust was scheduled to fully mature.

Thaddeus hadn't hidden me for seven years to protect me.

He had kept me isolated so I would never ask questions about the inheritance papers he had systematically forged under my name.

I turned my head and looked at him sleeping quietly in the soft morning light.

"You promised thirty more days, Thaddeus," I whispered, closing the briefcase without making a sound.

"You won't even get thirty minutes."
