Chapter 3 - The Grand Auction at the Vance Ballroom

By 7:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Vance Grand Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, silk gowns, and tailored tuxedos.

Boston’s elite gathered beneath the vaulted ceiling for the annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala—the most prestigious event on the city's social calendar.

At the center of the room stood a raised stage, featuring a polished wooden podium where a charity auction was scheduled to take place.

Thaddeus stood near the front row, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne.

Beside him stood Seraphina Sterling—now Seraphina Vance—wearing a floor-length white silk dress that shimmered like pearls under the spotlight.

She wore a multi-carat diamond necklace that had once belonged to the Vance matriarch.

"You look breathtaking, darling," Thaddeus whispered, pressing a light kiss against her cheek as society photographers flashed their cameras.

"We need to make sure the board sees us together before the bidding starts on the harbor rights," Seraphina smiled, her voice dripping with artificial grace. "My father confirmed the city council approved the zoning permit this afternoon."

"To the future of the Vance-Sterling alliance," Thaddeus toasted, clinking his glass against hers.

He believed the evening was his crowning achievement.

He believed Allara Hayes was sitting quietly inside the presidential suite upstairs, waiting for his promised late-night call.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

The chatter in the room faltered.

The string quartet stopped playing mid-measure.

Every eye in the room turned toward the entrance as a woman stepped into the light.

It wasn't the "reckless, unpredictable" Allara Hayes the tabloids loved to mock.

I wore a floor-length dark blue silk gown that draped like liquid night across my shoulders. My dark hair was styled into an elegant, high twist, secured by silver diamond pins that had belonged to my mother.

Beside me walked Julian Vance—Thaddeus’s estranged older brother, the former CEO who had been ousted from the corporate board three years ago under mysterious circumstances.

Thaddeus’s champagne glass nearly slipped from his fingers.

His eyes widened in pure, unadulterated shock as he watched me walk down the center aisle of the ballroom, my posture straight, my head held high, carrying a heavy golden key in my right hand.
