Chapter 2 - THE SILENT ALARM

The metallic echo of the golf club clattering against the cold marble floor of the foyer felt like a heavy stone dropping into a frozen lake.
Evan stood entirely paralyzed, his fingers still curled in the empty air where his weapon had just been kicked away by Grant Shaw’s heavy boot.
Behind him on the grand staircase, Vanessa Crane’s fingers gripped the velvet-wrapped railing so tightly her knuckles turned a bloodless, desperate white.
"You're making a massive mistake, Harrison," Evan spat, trying to force his voice into the smooth, aggressive register he used with his mid-level banking partners.
"Claire is suffering from prenatal anxiety, and she has been fabricating these administrative stories to cover her own emotional instability."
"The only thing that is unstable in this room is your liberty, Evan," Harrison Vale replied, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet frequency that made the security guard step closer.
"My daughter did not fabricate the sixty-four separate unauthorized wire transfers you routed from her trust account to a private luxury real estate project in Aspen."
"She did not forge her father’s corporate guarantee on the commercial lines of credit your logistics firm depended on to survive the quarter."
"And she certainly did not ask you to bring your 'strategy consultant' into the home my family paid for," he added, his cold eyes shifting to the trembling woman on the stairs.
Vanessa took a panicked step backward, her silk robe catching on a decorative brass spindle as she realized the front doors were being guarded from the outside.
"Evan, do something!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate panic that completely shattered her expensive, polished facade.
"Tell them about the partnership agreement! Tell them she signed the voluntary asset allocation waivers before the third trimester!"
"The waiver she signed was a standard medical proxy, Vanessa," Claire said, her voice carrying an absolute, freezing calm as she stood beside her father.

"The document you tried to replace it with was a total, non-negotiable power of attorney."
"But I spent twelve years watching my father dismantle corporate predators, and I never sign anything without a forensic witness."
