Chapter 3 - THE SHELL GAME

The transition from a quiet, isolated wife back into the sovereign heir of the Vale Meridian Group was completed before the first police cruiser arrived.

I did not run up the stairs to pack my clothes, nor did I shed a single tear over the broken white roses staining the marble at my feet.

Instead, I sat in the back of my father's luxury sedan, the steady hum of the engine providing a comforting shield against the freezing rain outside.

Beside me sat Martin Ellery, his laptop displaying a detailed, multi-year transaction log that mapped every single one of Evan’s hidden financial maneuvers.

"He used your digital signature to authorize a fifteen-million-dollar bridge loan from your grandfather’s trust fund, Claire," Martin explained softly.

"He told the board members the money was an interest-free family gift to expand their cold-chain shipping routes."

"But the actual destination of those funds was a holding firm registered under Vanessa Crane’s maiden name in the Cayman Islands."

"They were preparing to file for an emergency corporate insolvency on Friday, leaving you with the entire debt burden," he added.

"They believed that because I was pregnant, because I was resting at home under high-risk medical supervision, I wouldn't check the ledger," I said.

"They forgot that a mother's primary instinct is to protect her child from the wolves who pretend to be his protectors."

"The federal authorities have already flagged the transaction files," my father said, turning his head from the front passenger seat.

"The trapdoor is locked, Claire."

"And by the time the morning market opens, the House of Whitmore will be completely hollowed out."
