Chapter 2 - THE STOLEN EMBRYO

The cold stone of the driveway felt completely solid beneath my knees as I held the trembling little girl, the fading golden light of the sunset illuminating the polished silver of the fertility clinic tag dangling against her small yellow dress.
Maria stood frozen in the grand arched entrance of the mansion, her hands clutched tightly over her mouth, tears streaming down her pale face as she watched my briefcase roll across the pavers.
"Mr. Whitfield, please, I can explain everything... do not take her away from me," Maria sobbed, her entire body shaking with a primitive, terrifying panic.
"I never intended to violate your trust, but when the clinic registry went dark three years ago, I discovered what your board of directors had planned for Claire's legacy."
I didn't answer her immediately; instead, I gently pulled Sophia's tiny arms from around my neck, my fingers locking around the cold metal of the identification tag.
The serial numbers etched into the surface matched the exact cryptographic code of the second embryo my late wife and I had frozen before the cancer took her life.
"You didn't just find this tag in a storage locker, Maria," I said, my voice dropping into a freezing, absolute focus that cut through the evening breeze.
"This is the tracking code for the secure genetic vault at the Genesis Research Institute."
"The vault that my former partner, Julian Vance, told me had been destroyed in a liquid nitrogen system failure three weeks after Claire’s funeral."
Sophia looked up at me with large, innocent brown eyes that mirrored my own mother's features so perfectly it made the breath catch violently in my throat.
"Mommy told me you were fighting the bad men in the big city, Daddy," Sophia whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek with her small hand.
"She said you would build us a house where nobody could ever lock the doors on us again."
I stood up slowly, the exhaustion of my thirty-day Seattle business trip completely evaporating, replaced by a lethal, razor-sharp drive to balance the family ledger.
"Arthur," I called out to the private security car parked near the iron gates, my voice echoing across the manicured lawns of the estate.

"And notify the medical board that we are executing an immediate forensic verification on the Genesis fertility registry before the markets open tomorrow morning."
