Chapter 2 - THE TACTICAL BREACH

The high-pitched, metallic whine of the power drill biting into the reinforced steel core of my penthouse door vibrated straight through the polished concrete floor and into the soles of my feet.

I didn't panic, nor did I allow the old, familiar suffocating weight of my ex-husband's intimidating presence to dictate the rhythm of my breathing.

Instead, I stood in the middle of my minimalist white kitchen, wearing a sharp, tailored ivory silk robe, casually sipping my morning espresso while the security app on my screen pulsed with warning flags.

"Lexi! Open this door right now!" Ronald’s voice boomed through the mahogany panels, completely stripped of his usual smooth, corporate composure.

"What did you do to my mother's card? You humiliated her in front of the entire Miami elite at the St. Jude charity auction!"

"You're not thinking straight, Lexi! If you don't unlock this door, the locksmith will drill the cylinder, and I will have you legally institutionalized for self-harm!"

Beside him, Priscilla Cobb was pacing like a caged predator on the marble landing, her cream-colored Chanel coat flapping as she clutched her gold-clasped handbag to her chest.

"She’s a thief, Ronald! She deliberately cancelled my primary account right before the bidding opened on the fifty-thousand-dollar diamond line!" Priscilla hissed loudly.

"The security guards had to escort me from the ballroom like a common beggar because the transaction log flashed a direct fraud block!"

I walked slowly toward the foyer, the heavy steel security chain rattling softly as I pulled the auxiliary manual deadbolt loose with a sharp click.

I opened the door exactly three inches, letting the heavy, reinforced security chain catch the frame, creating an absolute barrier between my sanctuary and their greed.

Ronald’s eyes widened, the drill dropping slightly in his hand as he caught the dead, freezing calm radiating from my face.

"The access is gone, Priscilla," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the locksmith immediately lower his tools.

"And you have exactly sixty seconds to get off my property before the federal marshals arrive to explain why."
