Chapter 2 - THE TACTICAL EXTRACTION

The sterile white noise of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s high-risk maternity ward was the only sound that remained after Daniel’s heavy footsteps echoed down the polished corridor.

I lay perfectly still against the starch-white pillows, my hands resting over the high, rounded curve of my belly where my twin boys had finally settled into a quiet, rhythmic pattern.

The leather folder he had dropped beside my water cup remained untouched, its heavy document seal gleaming beneath the harsh fluorescent lights like an insult he believed I was too weak to challenge.

"General Mercer," I said, my voice dropping into the low, razor-sharp cadence of an active-duty commanding officer the moment the connection secured.

"This is Colonel Evelyn Shaw; the tactical breach has occurred, and the suspect has formally executed the document fraud."

"Evelyn," General Mercer's baritone voice boomed through the encrypted receiver, carrying a quiet, fierce maternal gravity that anchored my resolve.

"Are you stabilized? Dr. Nora Lee has already reported the spikes in your blood pressure; your physical safety is the priority."

"The twins are secure, sir, but Daniel just hand-delivered the forged divorce petition and confirmed the unauthorized transfer of my active-deployment trust fund," I replied with absolute, clinical calm.

"He used my digitized military notary stamp to bypass the defense department clearance filters, routing one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Vanessa Cole’s foreclosure registry."

"He believes I am nothing more than an invisible clerical worker who manages administrative filing systems while he builds his logistics empire."

"He has no idea that the very contracts his firm, Cole Logistics, is celebrating were the primary target of our task force’s procurement audit," I added, my eyes narrowing as the red light of the bedside monitor pulsed.

"The trapdoor is locked, Evelyn," Mercer confirmed, the sound of his keyboard clicking sharply through the line.

"The federal marshals have already been dispatched to freeze the primary accounts of Cole Logistics before the morning market opens."

"Your fifteen years of unblemished leadership are about to meet his sixteen months of deliberate theft."
