Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF COLE

The seventy-two hours of arrogant confidence the Cole family had displayed dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the police officers closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the steel restraints closing around Daniel’s wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

"Evelyn, please!" he sobbed, his body shaking violently as his knees buckled against the gravel driveway.

"I know I made an unforgivable mistake! I know I lost my temper! But we are still legally married!"

"You cannot leave my mother and sister on the street without a single dollar to cover their medical bills!"

"You are not my husband anymore, Daniel," I said, looking down at him with dead, unyielding eyes.

"You are simply a number in a forensic ledger that has finally been balanced."

"You called my presence an embarrassment, and you told your mother that some women just become expensive."

"Now, the ledger is clean."

"And your place is behind a set of steel bars for the next twenty-five years."

The district attorney moved with a swift, clinical speed that left no room for high-society influence or political corporate bribes.

By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court officially executed an emergency liquidation of all Cole Logistics assets.
