Chapter 2 - The Vanishing of Claire Whitmore

The brass elevator doors closed, sealing the silence around Claire as she descended into the underground parking garage.
She didn't return to the penthouse apartment she shared with Adrian, nor did she drive her usual luxury sedan, which was registered under the corporate fleet.
Instead, she walked two blocks through the cold Chicago rain to a private, secondary parking bay she had maintained under her maiden name for three years.
Inside stood a modest silver hatchback—a vehicle Adrian had forgotten existed.
She opened the glove compartment, pulled out a encrypted satellite laptop, and booted up the primary interface.
For nine years before her marriage, Claire had been the chief forensic auditor for the Federal Treasury's regional task force.
Adrian believed she had retired to become a dutiful corporate wife, attending charity galas and decorating hotel suites.
He had no idea that her retirement was a cover, and her forensic credentials had remained active under a master classification.
Claire's fingers flew across the keyboard, executing a series of encrypted protocols that bypassed the primary firewalls of Whitmore Grand Hotels.
She didn't freeze his personal bank accounts right away; she executed a forensic snapshot of the primary ledger, locking the transaction logs for the $9.8 million transfer to Blue Meridian Consulting.
Then she placed her primary phone on the passenger seat, pulled out the SIM card, and snapped it in half.
"The wife you wanted to declare mentally incompetent just disappeared, Adrian," Claire whispered into the quiet car, looking at her reflection in the rearview mirror.
"Now let's see how well your empire runs without the person who built its foundation."

She started the engine and drove into the dark, rain-soaked night, vanishing from the city before Adrian could even complete his call to his corporate PR firm.
