Chapter 2 - The Eye Above the Staircase

Grant Whitmore’s voice sliced through the foyer like an iron blade.
"Vanessa. Step away from her."
Vanessa froze mid-stride, her designer heel hovering above the polished marble.
Her eyes flicked toward the doorway where Grant stood in a dark charcoal suit, his coat open, his face an ashen mask of pure, unadulterated shock.
Behind him, Marta Alvarez dropped to her knees beside Grace, her hands trembling as she pressed her apron against Grace’s lower back.
Grace lay curled on her side, clutching her abdomen, her face pale, her breathing shallow and ragged. The photograph of her three children lay inches from her hand, its corner stained with dust.
Vanessa recovered her composure in a heart-beat, her expression shifting instantly into a practiced look of panicked distress.
"Grant! Thank God you're home!" Vanessa stammered, taking a step toward him with outstretched hands. "She stole my mother's diamond bracelet! I caught her red-handed, and when I confronted her, she fell! She tried to fake an injury to cover it up!"
Grant didn't look at Vanessa’s hands. He didn't look at her face.
Slowly, deliberately, he raised his eyes toward the dark mahogany archway above the grand staircase.
Mounted discreetly inside the crown molding was a high-definition, 4K security dome camera—installed three months earlier after a commercial break-in at his primary logistics warehouse.
Vanessa’s eyes followed his gaze.
The color drained from her face so fast she looked as though she had been struck.
"Grant..." Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "Listen to me..."
"Marta, call an ambulance," Grant commanded, his voice unnaturally quiet, holding a cold, terrifying authority that made the room go silent.
"It's already on the way, Mr. Whitmore," Marta wept, wrapping her sweater around Grace's trembling shoulders.
Grant walked over to Grace, kneeling beside her on the cold marble floor. He picked up the faded photograph of her children, brushed the dust off its plastic sleeve, and placed it gently into Grace’s hand.
"Stay with me, Grace," Grant said, his fingers pressing against her weak pulse. "Stay with me."

Grace looked up at him through tears of agony, her knuckles white as she squeezed the photo. "Isaiah..." she choked out. "My baby... he stopped moving..."
Grant looked up at Vanessa standing near the foot of the stairs, his eyes filled with a dark, unyielding fury that promised complete and total destruction.
