Chapter 4 - The Unmasking of Vanessa Hale

By 10:00 p.m., Vanessa Hale sat in the grand drawing room of her family’s waterfront estate in Greenwich, clutching a glass of white wine while her mother, Victoria, paced the floorboards.

"You're overreacting, Vanessa," Victoria scoffed, adjusting her diamond necklace. "She’s a housekeeper. A simple out-of-court settlement from our legal team will cover her medical bills and sign a non-disclosure agreement."

"Mom, you don't understand!" Vanessa panicked, setting her glass down so hard the wine spilled across the mahogany table. "Grant saw the camera! He knows!"

The grand front doors of the Hale estate swung open.

Grant Whitmore walked in, flanked by two uniformed Greenwich police officers and Detective Miller.

Victoria Hale stepped forward instantly, her chin raised high with aristocratic arrogance. "Grant! What is the meaning of this intrusion? You can't just barge into my home with police officers!"

Grant didn't even acknowledge her. He walked straight toward Vanessa, who backed up against the fireplace mantel, her hands shaking violently.

Grant pulled out his phone, connected it to the drawing room's large smart television, and pressed play.

The high-definition footage played across the sixty-inch screen in front of Victoria and the officers: the begging, the brutal strike, the cold smile, the cruel kick.

Victoria gasped, dropping her wine glass onto the plush carpet as the horror of her daughter's action played out in living color.

"Vanessa Hale," Detective Miller stated, stepping forward with steel handcuffs pulled from his belt. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, felony endangerment of an unborn child, and reckless assault."

"Grant! No! Please!" Vanessa shrieked as the officers grabbed her arms, clicking the steel cuffs around her manicured wrists. "I love you! I was just stressed! She stole my mother's bracelet!"

Grant pulled a small silver box from his pocket and opened it, revealing the diamond bracelet resting inside.

"The housekeepers found this in your secondary handbag in the bedroom, Vanessa," Grant said coldly, his voice devoid of a single drop of warmth. "You misplaced it yourself."

"You didn't just ruin your life tonight, Vanessa," Grant added, watching the officers guide her toward the front door. "You destroyed every single contract your father's firm holds with Whitmore Maritime."
