Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED GLASS

I stepped out of the kitchen, my boots clicking with a heavy, ominous rhythm against the dark hardwood floorboards.
The laughter from the living room died instantly, the sudden silence stretching across the space like a tightening piano wire.
My mother, Evelyn, paused mid-laugh, her thumb hovering over the glowing screen of her smartphone as she slowly looked up at me.
Beside her, my cousin Julian and his wife, Victoria, sat frozen, their smug smiles fading into uneasy, guarded expressions.
"Daniel, you're finally home," Evelyn said, her voice carrying a smooth, high-society elegance that had always been used to mask her cruelty.
"We were beginning to think your corporate board meeting would keep you in the city all night."
"Why isn't dinner on the table yet?"
I didn't answer her, my body tensed into a rigid, unyielding line of absolute fury as I stood in the archway of the living room.
"Daniel?" Victoria chimed in, adjusting her gold bracelet with a casual, dismissive shrug.
"We asked Clara to whip up some of those garlic parmesan rolls, but she’s been taking forever in the kitchen."
"You really need to teach your wife how to manage a household more efficiently."
My hands clenched into tight, bloodless fists at my sides, the rage inside my chest threatening to boil over.
"Stand up," I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register that made Julian’s eyes widen in sudden panic.
"Daniel, don't start with your dramatic attitude," Evelyn sighed, waving her hand as if dismissing a servant.
"We are guests in this house, and we have had a very exhausting day dealing with the family estate's legal transitions."
I walked over to the coffee table, my eyes locking onto the crystal bowl of fruit sitting in the center.
With one swift, violent sweep of my arm, I sent the crystal bowl flying across the room.
It shattered against the stone fireplace, sending shards of glass and bruised fruit exploding across the expensive rug.
Victoria let out a sharp, high-pitched shriek, scrambling backward onto the sofa cushions.
Julian stood up immediately, his hands raised defensively as he stared at me in complete disbelief.
"Are you insane, Daniel?" Julian yelled, his voice cracking under the sudden, suffocating weight of my anger.
"You could have hurt someone!"
"The only person being hurt in this house is my wife," I whispered, my voice carrying a freezing authority that made him freeze in his tracks.
"She is eight months pregnant, carry my son, and she is currently scrubbing the grease off your plates while you sit in absolute comfort."
"I want every single one of you out of my house."
"Right now."
Evelyn slowly rose from the sofa, her face turning an instant, pasty shade of gray under the warm living room lights.
"This is my late husband’s estate, Daniel," she hissed, her elegant mask completely slipping to reveal the venomous predator beneath.

"You do not have the legal authority to evict us."
"And by tomorrow morning, you will realize exactly who holds the keys to this family's future."
