Plot twist

Chapter 3 - THE LEDGER BENEATH THE FLOOR

The rain had turned Manhattan into a mirror by the time Claire arrived at Hale Maritime.

The building rose above the street like a wall of black glass.

Three years earlier, she had walked through those doors as Dominic's wife.

Tonight, she entered as something else.

A woman who had stopped being afraid of what she might discover.

Dominic was waiting in the private conference room.

He stood near the window with his hands in his pockets.

When Claire entered, his eyes immediately went to her face.

“You came.”

“You said someone broke into your house.”

“Yes.”

“Show me.”

Dominic didn't move.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“There was nothing obvious.”

“Then why did you say someone broke in?”

“Because the alarm was disabled.”

Her expression changed.

“How?”

“From inside.”

That was worse.

Claire walked toward him.

“Who has access?”

“Security.”

“Employees?”

“Four.”

“Family?”

“No.”

“Victor?”

“Not anymore.”

“Serena?”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Claire studied him.

“Then someone copied a credential.”

“That's what I think.”

“Or someone who never lost one.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You're thinking Victor.”

“I’m thinking anyone who had access to your systems.”

Dominic opened a drawer.

He removed a small black folder.

“This is what I found.”

Claire stared at it.

“Where?”

“Inside a safe in one of my father's old properties.”

“You own it?”

“Technically.”

“Why didn't you know it existed?”

“Because my father kept dozens of properties under holding companies.”

Claire looked at the folder.

“Open it.”

Dominic did.

Inside were copies of financial statements.

Wire transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Company seals.

Claire leaned closer.

Then she saw her father's name.

“Benjamin Bennett.”

Dominic nodded.

“Six years before we met, your father transferred two million dollars to a company called Northstar Consulting.”

Claire frowned.

“That was a shipping consultancy.”

“Yes.”

“It collapsed.”

“Two years later.”

She continued reading.

“Victor Shaw was one of its directors.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes widened.

“Victor worked for my father.”

“Apparently.”

Claire kept reading.

Then she saw something else.

A signature.

Her father's.

And beneath it—

Dominic Hale.

Her hands went cold.

“That's impossible.”

Dominic looked at the document.

“My father signed it.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“That's not your father's signature.”

Dominic stared.

“What?”

“I've seen his signature thousands of times.”

She pointed.

“That's a copy.”

He leaned closer.

Claire was right.

The signature looked perfect.

Too perfect.

There was no natural variation.

No pressure difference.

No hesitation.

Someone had reproduced it.

“Forgery,” Dominic whispered.

Claire looked at him.

“Someone used your father's name to authorize payments from my family's trust.”

“And blamed it on him.”

“Yes.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“Why?”

“That's what we need to find out.”

They spent the next two hours going through the records.

The pattern slowly emerged.

Money had moved from Bennett entities into Northstar.

From Northstar into shell companies.

From shell companies into political lobbying firms, private contractors, and offshore accounts.

Some payments appeared legitimate.

Others didn't.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Not Victor.

Not Dominic.

Not Benjamin Bennett.

A company.

MERIDIAN STRATEGIC PARTNERS.

Claire recognized it.

“Serena.”

Dominic looked at her.

“She worked with them.”

“After you left me.”

“Before that too.”

Dominic frowned.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew she was involved.”

“I knew her family had business relationships with Meridian.”

Claire stared.

“And you never investigated?”

“I trusted her.”

Claire said nothing.

The irony was painful.

Dominic had trusted Serena while distrusting Claire.

Now the truth was becoming unavoidable.

His phone rang.

Gabriel.

Dominic answered.

“Talk.”

Gabriel's voice was urgent.

“We found Victor.”

Dominic straightened.

“Where?”

“New Jersey.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Bring him.”

“We tried.”

Dominic's expression changed.

“What happened?”

“He refused.”

“Victor doesn't refuse me.”

“He does now.”

“Put him on.”

A second later, Victor's voice came through.

“Dominic.”

Claire watched her ex-husband's face change.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you can't reach.”

“You're wrong.”

Victor laughed softly.

“You still think this is about you.”

Dominic said nothing.

Victor continued.

“You should ask your wife what her father really did.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“Put him on speaker.”

Dominic did.

Victor's voice changed when he heard her.

“Claire.”

“You know me.”

“Unfortunately.”

“What did my father do?”

Silence.

“Victor.”

“You think Benjamin Bennett was innocent?”

Claire felt anger rise.

“What did he do?”

“He built the first network.”

“What network?”

“The one your husband inherited.”

Dominic stepped forward.

Victor laughed.

“Your father wasn't just an investor, Claire.”

“He was a facilitator.”

“For what?”

“Ports.”

“Money.”

“People.”

Claire felt sick.

Dominic's expression became cold.

Victor continued.

“Benjamin Bennett and Dominic's father built a system that moved things through ports nobody wanted documented.”

Claire whispered—

“Drugs?”

Victor didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

“Give me proof.”

“I have it.”

“Where?”

“Where your fathers started.”

The line went dead.

Dominic immediately called Gabriel.

“Trace him.”

“We can't.”

“Then find him.”

Claire stared at the folder.

“My father.”

Dominic shook his head.

“We don't know if Victor is telling the truth.”

“You believe him.”

“I believe he knows something.”

Claire looked at him.

“What happens if he does?”

Dominic didn't answer.

She already knew.

Everything Dominic had built might have roots in a criminal network he never understood.

And if that network still existed—

someone might want them both dead.

That night, Claire stayed at Dominic's penthouse.

Not because they were together.

Because the building had security.

Noah slept in the guest room.

Dominic slept on the couch.

At 2:11 in the morning, Claire woke to a sound.

A soft metallic click.

She got out of bed.

Walked down the hallway.

Dominic was already awake.

He held one finger to his lips.

Someone was inside.

The security system had not activated.

Dominic moved silently toward the kitchen.

Claire followed.

A shadow passed through the doorway.

Dominic lunged.

The intruder escaped through the balcony.

Gabriel and security arrived seconds later.

No one was caught.

But something had been left behind.

A small envelope.

Claire picked it up.

Her name was written across the front.

She opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

Her father.

Dominic's father.

Victor.

And a fourth man.

Claire stared.

She recognized him immediately.

Michael Bennett.

Her uncle.

Her face went pale.

Dominic took the photograph.

“What?”

May you like

Claire whispered—

“My uncle was there.”
