Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT DOMINIC FINALLY CHOSE HIS FAMILY

Marco Bellandi moved quickly.
Within forty-eight hours, three Hale Maritime lenders received anonymous allegations of fraud.
Two regulators opened inquiries.
A major shipping contract was suspended.
The stock price collapsed.
Dominic's board demanded an emergency meeting.
And Marco disappeared.
It was no longer a business dispute.
It was war.
But Dominic refused to fight it the old way.
He could have sent men.
He could have threatened rivals.
He could have made calls that ended careers.
Instead, he called Evelyn Carter.
“I have evidence.”
She arrived within hours.
The USB contained everything.
Recordings of Victor.
Transfers.
Instructions from Marco.
Names of shell companies.
Even proof that the attack against Claire had been ordered.
The photograph of Noah had been intentional.
A warning.
Not a random threat.
Marco wanted Dominic desperate.
He wanted him reckless.
He wanted him to react violently so the entire organization could be portrayed as criminal.
Dominic understood.
For the first time, he refused to give his enemy what he wanted.
Claire watched him work for days.
No sleep.
No excuses.
No disappearing.
Every time Noah called, Dominic answered.
Every time Claire needed information, he told her.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing manipulated.
One night, Claire found him asleep at the dining table.
Documents surrounded him.
She stood there for several seconds.
Then placed a blanket over his shoulders.
Dominic opened his eyes.
“Claire?”
“Go to sleep.”
“I can't.”
“You need to.”
“What time is it?”
“Two.”
He sat up.
“Where's Noah?”
“Asleep.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Thank you.”
Claire nodded.
She started to leave.
“Claire.”
She stopped.
“I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Why are you still here?”
She turned.
“Because this affects Noah.”
“Only Noah?”
She hesitated.
Dominic's eyes stayed on her.
“I don't know.”
That was the truth.
And somehow, it was enough.
The next morning, Marco called.
Directly.
Dominic answered.
“Dominic.”
“Marco.”
“You've made this unnecessarily difficult.”
Dominic's expression remained calm.
“You threatened my son.”
“I sent a message.”
“You photographed a three-year-old child.”
“Because you weren't listening.”
Dominic's voice became quiet.
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You assumed I still cared more about winning than protecting my family.”
Marco laughed.
“Family?”
“You abandoned your wife.”
Dominic closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes.”
“You chose Serena.”
“Yes.”
“And now you think you can become a good man?”
“No.”
Silence.
“I think I can stop being the man I was.”
Marco paused.
“You'll lose everything.”
“Maybe.”
“You'll lose your company.”
“Maybe.”
“You'll lose your money.”
“Maybe.”
“You'll lose Claire.”
Dominic looked across the room.
Claire stood there.
Listening.
Dominic answered—
“That is no longer your decision.”
Marco hung up.
Three hours later, the FBI raided six locations.
Victor was arrested.
Marco escaped.
For two weeks, no one knew where he was.
Then he made one final mistake.
He went after Claire.
Not directly.
He targeted the Bennett Trust.
The building was evacuated after a bomb threat.
Claire was escorted out.
Dominic arrived before the police finished securing the street.
He saw Claire.
Ran toward her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Noah?”
“With the nanny.”
Dominic exhaled.
Then pulled Claire into his arms.
She froze.
His hands trembled.
Not hers.
His.
“Dominic.”
“I thought—”
He stopped.
For once, he didn't hide the fear.
“I thought I lost you.”
Claire slowly placed her hands against his chest.
“You didn't.”
He looked down at her.
“I know I don't deserve another chance.”
She swallowed.
“No.”
“I know.”
“But…”
He waited.
Claire looked into his eyes.
“I haven't decided whether I want to give you one.”
He nodded.
“That's fair.”
She stepped back.
“Don't make me decide quickly.”
“I won't.”
“Don't pressure me.”
“I won't.”
“Don't promise forever.”
“I won't.”
“Then what will you do?”
Dominic looked at her.
“I'll show up tomorrow.”
She smiled faintly.
“And the day after?”
“Yes.”
“And the day after that?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I don't come back?”
His answer came immediately.
“Yes.”
That was the first time Claire believed him.
Because there was nothing in it for him.
No negotiation.
No guarantee.
Just choice.
Three days later, Marco was arrested.
The evidence from Serena's USB connected him to the financial crimes.
Victor cooperated.
Michael testified.
Dominic turned over every relevant document.
Hale Maritime survived.
Barely.
But it survived.
Dominic stepped down as chairman.
The company was restructured.
A new board took control.
For the first time, Dominic no longer owned every decision.

And he discovered something strange.
He could breathe.
