Plot twist

Chapter 4 - THE UNCLE WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Michael Bennett answered his phone at 7:03 the next morning.

He did not sound surprised to hear Claire.

“I wondered when you'd call.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“You knew.”

Silence.

“About the photograph?”

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

Dominic stood beside her.

His expression was unreadable.

Claire's voice shook.

“How long?”

“Twenty years.”

She closed her eyes.

Twenty years.

Her entire childhood.

Her marriage.

Her father's death.

All of it had been built on a secret.

“Come to the apartment.”

Michael hesitated.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Dominic is there, I won't speak.”

Dominic took the phone.

“Then speak to me.”

Michael's voice became colder.

“You are the last person I want to explain this to.”

“Why?”

“Because you benefited from it.”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“I didn't know.”

“Your father did.”

That silence was devastating.

Dominic looked away.

Claire took the phone back.

“You're coming.”

Michael sighed.

“One hour.”

He arrived exactly one hour later.

He looked older than Claire remembered.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

A face that had spent years carrying something heavy.

He entered.

Saw Dominic.

Then looked at Claire.

“I am sorry.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“Don't start there.”

Michael nodded.

“Fair.”

“Tell me everything.”

He sat.

Dominic remained standing.

Michael began.

“Your father and Dominic's father met through maritime insurance.”

Claire listened.

“They discovered that legitimate shipping companies could move enormous amounts of money without attracting attention.”

“Money laundering.”

Michael nodded.

“Among other things.”

“Drugs?”

“Yes.”

“People?”

Michael looked away.

“Yes.”

Claire felt sick.

“Did my father participate?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dominic's father?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dominic know?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Claire's eyes filled with anger.

“You let me marry him.”

“I tried to stop you.”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“I tried to stop the marriage for reasons you misunderstood.”

“What reasons?”

“Because I knew the past would eventually find you.”

Claire stared.

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father threatened me.”

“With what?”

“Your life.”

The room went silent.

Michael continued.

“He had people watching everyone around him.”

Claire shook her head.

“My father loved me.”

“He did.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“He loved you and still did terrible things.”

That sentence stayed in the room.

Michael looked at Dominic.

“Your father eventually wanted out.”

Dominic's face changed.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He had become afraid.”

“Of whom?”

“Your father's partner.”

“Who?”

Michael said the name.

“Arthur Bellandi.”

Dominic froze.

Bellandi.

The same family he had negotiated with years later.

The same family that had nearly acquired a controlling position in Hale Maritime.

Claire looked between them.

“Your fathers were partners.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“And Victor?”

“Victor was their accountant.”

Michael continued.

“He kept the records.”

“Then why did he betray them?”

“Because he wanted control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Where is Arthur Bellandi now?”

Michael looked at Dominic.

“Dead.”

Dominic stared.

“When?”

“Two years before your father.”

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Dominic's expression became suspicious.

“Was it?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Claire whispered—

“What happened to my father?”

Michael's face changed.

“He tried to leave.”

“And?”

“Victor framed him.”

“For what?”

“Money laundering.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Her father had not died because of illness.

He had died under suspicion.

His reputation had been destroyed.

His companies had collapsed.

The Bennett Trust had been left to rebuild from the wreckage.

And everyone had blamed Benjamin Bennett.

Claire sat down.

“All these years…”

Michael nodded.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Victor?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Michael looked toward Dominic.

“Now I am more afraid of the people who replaced him.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Who?”

Michael looked at him.

“Your board.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“What?”

“Victor wasn't working alone.”

“Who is?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Claire stood.

“You do.”

Michael looked at her.

“You have always been too smart.”

“I learned from you.”

He almost smiled.

Then his face became serious.

“The old network never disappeared.”

“Where is it?”

“Everywhere.”

“That means nothing.”

“It means shipping companies, insurance brokers, private security firms, warehouses, politicians, customs officials.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“How deep?”

Michael answered quietly.

“Deep enough that killing Victor won't end it.”

Claire looked at Dominic.

“What do we do?”

Before he could answer, Dominic's phone rang.

Gabriel.

Dominic answered.

“What?”

Gabriel's voice was urgent.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone filed an emergency motion against Claire.”

Dominic's face changed.

“For custody?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Asset seizure.”

Claire froze.

“Who filed it?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“The Bennett Trust.”

Michael stood.

“That’s impossible.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Who authorized it?”

Gabriel answered.

“Michael Bennett.”

Everyone stared at Michael.

He looked genuinely shocked.

“I didn't.”

Dominic's voice became cold.

“Then someone forged your authorization.”

Claire's stomach dropped.

“Like my father's signature.”

Exactly.

Someone had copied Michael's identity.

And they were using the Bennett Trust to attack Dominic.

But why?

Then Claire saw it.

The pattern.

Victor had never wanted to destroy Hale Maritime.

He wanted to control it.

And the fastest way to do that was to create a crisis large enough to force Dominic into selling.

Who would buy?

Bellandi.

Claire whispered—

“They're trying to force a takeover.”

Dominic nodded.

“And they need us fighting each other.”

Michael looked at Claire.

“Then stop fighting.”

Claire stared at him.

Dominic looked at her.

For the first time in years, they stood on the same side.

But before either could speak, every light in the apartment went out.

Blackness swallowed the room.

A gunshot exploded from the hallway.

Claire screamed.

Dominic grabbed her and pulled her behind the wall.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Gabriel shouted from outside.

“DOWN!”

Dominic moved toward the door.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You stay here.”

“Dominic—”

“Claire.”

His voice was different.

Not commanding.

Afraid.

She let go.

Seconds later, security rushed in.

No attacker.

No body.

Only a bullet hole in the wall.

And beneath it—

another photograph.

Claire picked it up.

It showed Noah.

Leaving preschool.

Taken that morning.

Her blood turned cold.

On the back were four words.

STOP DIGGING.

Dominic read them.

Then looked at Claire.

This time, neither of them needed to say it.

May you like

The secret was no longer about money.

Someone had just threatened their son.
